Activity Name: Hit the Target

Activity Name: Road Trip Grade level: 6-7

Skills/Goals: Students will apply the formula Distance equals Rate times Time to find the distance traveled on a trip. Students will also solve for the rate of speed and time.

Assessment Anchor(s) & Eligible Content addressed:

M06.A-N.2.1.1 Solve problems involving operations (+, –, ×, ÷) with whole numbers, decimals (through thousandths), straight computation, or word problems.

M06.A-R.1.1.2 Find the unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b (with b _ 0), and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.

M06.A-R.1.1.4 Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed.

M07.A-R.1.1.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units.

M07.A-R.1.1.4 Represent proportional relationships by equations.

M07.A-R.1.1.6 Use proportional relationships to solve multi-step ratio and percent problems.

Students: whole class activity

Materials needed:

worksheet provided and a calculator, students could be asked to find distances between two locations by accessing the internet

Directions:

← Students will be simulating taking a road trip around the state as part of their summer vacation.

← A worksheet is provided where students will need to use the formula d = rt to find distance traveled given the rate and the time. Students will also be asked to find the average rate of speed traveled given the distance and time. Finally, students will be asked to find the time spent traveling given the distance traveled and the rate of speed.

← The trip will start in Harrisburg and go to Philadelphia to visit a few historic sites and see a Phillies game, a distance of about 107 miles. Next, they will go from Philadelphia to Paupack in the Pocono Mountains, a distance of about 155 miles. There they may enjoy some swimming, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Then the trip leaves Paupack and goes to James Creek to visit Raystown Lake, another outdoor recreational area, a distance of about 232 miles. From James Creek, the students will go to Pittsburgh. a distance of about 118 miles, to see a Pirates game. From Pittsburgh, they will return to Harrisburg, a distance of about 204 miles. They will conclude their trip with a tour of the Capitol Building.

Extensions:

← Students could be asked to find the average speed for the entire trip.

← Students could be asked to find activities they would enjoy at various locations along the trip

← Students could be asked to plan their own road trip. Some guidelines may be given such as the following:

o the minimum and/or maximum number of stops they need to make

o a minimum and/or maximum number of miles they must travel

o a minimum and/or maximum amount of driving time

o a minimum and/or maximum amount of fuel for a vehicle with a specified miles per gallon rating

You will be taking a road trip around the state during your summer vacation. Leaving from Harrisburg, you will go to Philadelphia, Paupack, James Creek, Pittsburgh, and return to Harrisburg. Along the way, you will use the formula d = rt to find distance traveled, rate of speed, or time. So, pack your bags and let’s get started.

Your first stop will be in Philadelphia. You will visit Independence Hall, see the Liberty Bell and, go to Citizens Bank Park to watch a Phillies baseball game. If it takes two hours to get from Harrisburg to Philadelphia and you travel at an average speed of 55 miles per hour, about how many miles is it from Harrisburg to Philadelphia?

The next day, you go from Philadelphia to Paupack in the Pocono Mountains. There you will enjoy swimming, hiking, and other outdoor activities at Lake Wallenpaupack. The trip to Paupack takes about three and one-half hours. The traffic is heavy so you only average about 44 miles per hour. How many miles is it from Philadelphia to Paupack?

The next leg of your trip takes you from Paupack to James Creek, the site of Raystown Lake. It is a recreational area built and maintained by the Corps of Army Engineers. Here you will find boating, canoeing, fishing, and other outdoor activities. The trip takes three hours and thirty-nine minutes and covers about 233 miles. What is your average rate of speed?

The following day you leave Raystown Lake and head to Pittsburgh to see a Pirates baseball game. The game starts at 12:35 pm, but you want to get there early so you can take a tour of the ballpark. The tour starts at eleven o’clock and includes lunch. The trip from Raystown Lake to Pittsburgh is about 120 miles. If you can average fifty miles per hour, at what time do you need to leave Raystown Lake to arrive in Pittsburgh at about eleven in the morning.

The last leg of your trip is to travel from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg where you will take a tour of the Capitol Building and return home. The trip is about 204 miles. If the trip takes three hours and forty-five minutes, what was your average speed?
