“Roaring 20’s & DIRTY 30’S”

Each group is required to:

• research the major events/accomplishments of their area of study

• complete a trifold display that outlines each event/accomplishment

• compile all materials in a visually stimulating display

• provide an overview of their display as the class tours the display area

Each individual group member is required to:

• identify a key figure from their area of study and complete one page biography (all members will choose different people)

• identify a major event from their area of study and complete a half page summary (all members will choose different events)

• complete research notes, and a bibliography for the biography and event summary

• construct/complete each of the artifacts outlined in their instructions

**number of people/events required = the number of group members – i.e. each member of the group must complete 1 biography and 1 event outline**

Group #1 – Prohibition/Bootlegging/Gangsters (7)

Artifacts:

Map of Rum Alley, Most Wanted Poster, Temperance leaflet, distillery pamphlet defending alcohol consumption, Newspaper report regarding the illegal sale of alcohol from Canada to the U.S, Political Speech on Prohibition (for or against), secret letters exchanged between American and Canadian citizens organizing the illegal sale of alcohol.

Group #2 – Sports (6)

Artifacts:

Interview with a famous athlete from the time, Program from an NHL game from the time, Program for an MLB game from the time, Newspaper “Sports” section dealing with the scores from one night of games, model Stanley Cup, Model Olympic Medal

Group #3 – Entertainment and Culture (8)

Artifacts:

Record cover, theater/show review, book cover, song lyric sheet and/or music sheet, diary entry from a night out at the club, page from a clothing catalogue, instructions on how to perform one of the popular dances of the time, radio interview with a singer/band of the time.

Group #4 – Inventors, Inventions, and Technology (6)

Artifacts:

Radio advertisement for an upcoming event (your choice – sports or cultural), plan of an assembly line, ad for an airline, dairy entry detailing all the nice new technologies available in the home during the 1920s, advertisement from a car dealership outlining the various models of the time (including pictures and a caption explaining the car), interview with a famous Canadian scientist or inventor of the time.
