OUR TYREES CAME FROM CHARLES RIVER COUNTY THRU NEW KENT TO WEST VIRGINIA

The immigrant William Tyree came to Charles City County, Va. about 1760. He had come to be the male heir to his deceased grandfather, another William Tyree. Actually, the grandfather had died and his will was “presented” in Charles City County 1740 by his “friend” Francis Tyree. Over the intervening years, Francis Tyree seems to have been trustee of the Tyree property; but he died and his will was probated 4-3-1754, leaving all his property (including William’s) in charge of his wife Mary Cooke Tyree. On 6-2-1756 some William Tyree (there was a William Tyree, constable, in 1755 who had some recordings of unpaid debts?) sued Francis Tyree and Mary Cooke Tyree for the use of his land; and the Court ordered Mary to pay 22 pounds, 12 shillings and 8 pence “current money” for 14 years rent on 300A of land -- payment to come from estate of Francis Tyree, dec’d. It wasn’t until 1760 that our young William Tyree appeared in Charles City County recordings, identified as “feoffment” William Tyree (the word was then used for owners of property who had not yet taken possession); at the same Court this William was indentured to Francis Dancy (a neighbor to the Tyree land); but Mary Cooke Tyree continued to control the inheritance. The Cookes were a big land owning family; Mary kept young William’s property under the name of her son, Francis Tyree, Jr. In 1767 Francis, Jr. died leaving everything to his mother Mary Cooke Tyree. Oct. 4, 1769, William Tyree (now not so young) charged the administrators of the will of Mary Tyree Cooke to show cause why the will of Francis Tyree, Jr. should not be recorded. Then in 1770, our William sold 155A for 96 pounds (William’s wife “Sarah” waiving dower) -- at least some of the estate had been freed; but the major part was still with Cooke descendents, finally winding up in the hands of a Rebecca Hubbard Cooke, who in making a marriage contract with one James Bray Johnson, had to file a public statement of property under her control which would NOT pass to her new husband. Rebecca so noted 1773 (as being the Tyree estate) a 217A piece of land named “Westbury” and named each of 16 slaves. Dec. 1, 1773 William sold a slave “Will” to Amos Ladd for 60 pounds. The tax lists of Charles City County 1782 charge William Tyree with 219A, 16 slaves, 14 cows, 5 horses and one titheable beside himself (apparently a son also named William). July 25, 1783, William Tyree, Jr. promises to pay 24 pounds ... in officers’ or soldiers’ certificates “such as was granted to him for their pay money due them by the State of Virginia, on demand” (Charles City Co., Loose Papers -- if only prospective DAR applicants could know whether this was our William, who was then about 36 or 37, or his son). In the 1783 tax lists of Charles City Co., Allan Ladd is charged with 219A “lately charged to William Tyree”. In 1785 a newly arrived (and just to confuse things, a 2nd) William Tyree appeared on the tax rolls of New Kent Co., showing 9 slaves, 5 of them with names of those listed by Rebecca Cooke back in 1773; he was also charged with a billiard license (a common amusement for a tavern or inn). Later New Kent County tax records produce titheable charges for son Richard F. (1791), then son John (1792) and then son Francis (son William, Jr. seems to have been left in Charles City County with 3 slaves).

Our interest follows Richard F. Tyree (RESEARCHER YOUNG TYREE says the F. stands for Fleming?); he was “said to have been” sickly and went to the new mountain health spa of Sweet Springs to take the cure. The climate must have agreed with him; in 1801 he took 50A in Greenbrier County and was appointed 1802 postmaster of Greenbrier (the main settlement there wasn’t officially named Lewisburg until 1838) for one year. In 1803 he bought town lot #57 and built the two story, log inn, The Long Ordinary (so named because it served the 3 ordinary meals of the day and was 30 feet deep by 225 feet long), situated where the NS and EW Trails crossed in the center of the town. Over these years, Richard seems to have been joined at times by brother John Tyree; and many area deeds were later registered to a Francis Tyree (both kept their residence in New Kent County). Richard married 4-3-1804 (at the Johnston’s Stone House on Kearn’s Farm with minister Josiah Osborne officiating) Sarah Johnston b. 1784 d/o Capt. William Johnston and his wife Jane Davis. In 1805 Richard paid tax on 1 horse, 1 Black and 2 titheables (was the 2nd John?). Although Richard and Sarah sold lot #57 to Joseph Dixon, Sr. in 1805, they continued to run The Long Ordinary until 1809 when Richard opened a boot business in the abandoned log courthouse. Richard had been buying up land all along and in 1814 he bought a farm out the State Road, 5 miles east of Bowyer’s Ferry crossing of New River. The following year he moved his family there and opened another inn (in 1815 he again paid tax on 2 titheables, plus 1 horse, 2 Blacks and 3 cows). In 1818 he became Superintendent of the State Road and was responsible for the collections made at Bowyer’s Ferry. When the State Road was scheduled for replacement by the James River-Kanawha Turnpike in 1824, Richard built a new inn, The Stone House (2 stories with 13 rooms), along the new right of way and removed there about 1827. As one of a series of connecting stage stops across the mountains, this inn gained a good reputation; it was said the stable and its corral could hold 100 horses; the 45’ long front porch offered a pleasant meeting place in summer; the dining table seated 20 where Richard presided at its head with a chosen guest of honor seated at its foot. Over the years the Inn hosted many famous travelers (Matthew Fontain Maury, recuperating from a broken collar bone suffered in an overturned stage, stayed several months while he worked on his renown book of ocean currents). Richard was High Sheriff of Greenbrier County 1829-1830; his 1814 western move placed him in 1831 in the newly organized Fayette County. Before he left Lewisburg, the Governor had commissioned him a Justice of the Peace which office he held until his death 6-17-1834. Sarah died 11-6-1839. Richard and Sarah are buried in the family graveyard across from the now “Old Stone House” (accepted for National Register of Historic Places 6-20-1975). They left 9 children:

During the Civil War, Frank was a Major on Gen. Eckol’s staff. Aug. 16, 1861 the Army of Gen. John B. Floyd (ex. Gov of Va. and not a military man) took up headquarters in Frank’s Old Stone House. The House was later used by the Grey Army as well as for a military hospital. Frank served as a Confederate Scout; and both his sons were volunteers. There is a story that Mrs.Tyree ran marauding soldiers off her property with a pitch fork; however, the family was later forced to leave the property temporarily when Yankees took over the area. Frank’s gravestone in the Old Stone House graveyard has a Masonic emblem.

William Tyree b. 11-22-1807 in the Long Ordinary in Lewisburg, as 5 year old enrolled in Dr. John McElhanney's new Lewisburg Academy, in the years 1822-1823 William and Hudson M. Dickinson attended Rev. Remley's Academy in Lewisburg, traveling to and from together. In 8-11-1836 Dr. McElhanney m. William to Rebecca McClung b. 1-15-1817, dau. Joseph McClung and sister to Margaret McClung who m. William's bro, Francis; they had 4 children before Rebecca died 4-1-1842 (aged 24 years 11 months and was buried in graveyard of Old Stone House with infant son George Wm. Tyree d. 6-16-1842). McElhanney m. William for 2nd time 2-13-1844 to Sarah Campbell McClung b. 2-14-1814, d. 6-15-1888, cousin to dec'd Rebecca and dau. of Andrew McClung and Jane Dean; they had 1 son. William was Sheriff of Fayette 1831-1846; he settled in Mt. Cove (now Ansted, W.Va.) c. 1832 and bought (with br. Francis' financial assistance on their father’s death) Half Way House (inn) from George Hunter; William enlarged the inn and it became known as the Tyree Tavern. As inn-keeper William became Justice of the Peace, sometimes Post Master and head of the County Militia (with title of Col.); he also provided land for a graveyard and, when newcomer Julia Neale Jackson Woodson (mother of later famous Gen. “Stonewall” Jackson) died, with “no place to bury her”, William offered the spot. He served his County in the Virginia Legislature 1855-1856, at which time he encouraged his well-to-do planter friend of Halifax Co., Col. Wm. Douglas Moore, to move into the area. When the clash of Civil War split the area, the Tyree's became Confederates; and William raised a volunteer company, Company C. of the 22nd Regiment of the Virginia Infantry (The Fayette Rangers according to one list; both he and his sons were in Mountain Cove Guard on a second listing); as instigator he became Captain. Typhoid fever forced him to release his command 5-1-1862; Dr. Henry Dickinson (Wm.’s 1st Lt.) succeeded him as Captain; William's 2 adult sons remained with the group until the close of the War. William's greatest trial was probably when a Federal Company of Dragoons took over his Tavern and made it their headquarters, forcing William and his family to move behind Confederate lines. After the fighting, William returned to his home to manage his considerable property. On 1-20-1870 he gave the Chesapeake & Ohio RR the right to establish a New River Crossing, using his land -- which resulted in legal problems. The discovery of coal in his area made William a wealthy man "in English stocks"; the failure of the English Company he helped sponsor left him and his property unsettled. He served as High Sheriff of Fayette 1877-1881. At his death 7-29-1883 (from cancer of the tongue) at the home of his Dr. son, Woodson Andrew Tyree, he willed his 7 1/2A graveyard to the community, newly named Ansted. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Andrew Woodson Tyree b. 8-18-1837, d. Woodson Andrew Tyree 4-12-1893 “at 55 years, 7 months, 23 days”; is buried at old Tyree graveyard in Ansted, W. Va. He was schooled in Roncevert, the Academy of Lewisburg, began the study of medicine with Dr. John J. Stites, Fayetteville, and enrolled in University of Virginia School of Medicine; but his studies were interrupted by the Civil War when he enlisted 4-5-1861 in his father's 22nd Regiment as a 2nd Lt., 1st Lt. 5-1-1862; he was critically wounded 11-6-1863 in the left lung at the Battle of Droop Mt. and recommended for discharge but rejoined the fight as a 2nd Lt.; he was paroled from a prisoner of war encampment as a 1st Lt. 4-26-1865; on the Union's descriptive roll of prisoners his occupation was given as farmer, age 27, eyes blue, hair light, complexion dark, height 6' 2". When he returned to Va., a minister, one Rev. Cornelius Tyree serving at Amwell, Fayette Co., named his own son, b. 1866, Woodson Andrew Tyree. Our Woodson re-enrolled in medicine at the University of Virginia; later this other Woodson Andrew Tyree also enrolled at the University of Virginia (set-up for confusion). Graduated 6-29-1867, our Woodson accepted a call to practice (probably with a Dr. Baldwin) at Wapella, Ill. Here he met and m. 4-11-1868 Mary Juana Houston b.12-20-1851 d. 1-4-1901 dau. of Rev. John Quincy Adams Houston. Again Woodson accepted a call (from a friend, Mr. Alexander; a Mr. Alexander had given him sanctuary during his recovery from Civil War wounds?) to practice in Beaumont, Texas in 1876. He had been a Presbyterian; she a member of the Christian Church; in Beaumont they converted to convenience, it happened to be a Methodist Church. The coal boom in W. Va. brought him back home in a partnership with Dr. Dickinson 1881; they had an office at Hawk's Nest. In 1888 Woodson opened his own office in Thurmond, W. Va. where he worked until he died.

Helen Augusta Tyree b. 9-30-1869 Corning, Ill, d. 12-23-1952 Alameda, Calif., m. Warren D. Miller; no children. “Gussie” went to College in Lewisburg, which later burned down. “Gussie” worked for Edson F. Adams, Farmers’ and Merchants’ Savings Bank, Oakland ,Calif. In 1930 “Gussie” and her two extant syblings inherited funds ($36,000) from their maternal Aunt Lou Sherwood (sister to Mary Juanna Houston Tyree) along with 8 other nieces and nephews. Both “Gussie” and her husband were very ill in California by 1950.

William Fenton Tyree b.10-8-1872 Wapella, DeWitte Co., Ill., d. 12-18-1939 Dallas, Texas. On the death of his father, William who had completed two years at Barboursville College (later became Morris Harvey College) assumed the roll of family breadwinner; he invested the family assets to buy a partnership with a Mr. Page in a retail grocery in Huntington, W. Va.; in 1894 he traded the interest in the grocery store for an interest in a planing mill and construction company; in the depression panic (with breadlines) 1893-1895, the mill burned or was burnt and with it the family's inheritance. Several odd efforts terminated when William was admitted on trial at the Methodist Conference held in Charleston fall of 1898 and appointed to Lubbock Circuit. He m. 4-19-1898 Clara Lilian Fithian Gosling b. 9-22-1872 d. 4-28-1952 whose step-father was Rev. B.F. Gosling, pastor of the new Johnson Memorial Church in Huntington. The newly married couple was given a station at the Southern Methodist Church in Clarksburg where William shocked the congregation by keeping his church open and lighted all night and invited the coarse coal miners in, even preaching to them in the fields. At his next station Pikeville, Ky. 1902 he was considered "a treasure indeed" until he contacted typhoid fever and his wife called in a trained nurse; the congregation then ceased to pay him and it was the miners who sent a truck load of food and supplied the needed sickroom ice. At his next station, Ashland, Ky., he realized the demands of his growing family could not be met on a minister's salary; he had studied law with Judge Harvey in Pikeville; he took the bar examinations and located in Durant, Oklahoma (which not only needed him but offered education for his children in the Oklahoma State Teachers' College located there). At one time he ran for an elective judgeship and lost; but was ever after known as “Judge Tyree”. In 1927 he became interested in the opportunities in Texas oil and moved his family to Dallas; the syndicate he joined (The Texas-American Syndicate under Tucker and Tyree; later Centennial Oil Co.) ran afoul 1934 of the new Texas law against using the mails to defraud and William was sentenced to a year and a day at U.S. Southwestern Reformatory, El Reno, Okla., inmate #787); as a result the family lost its house and son Andrew dropped his medical studies to get a job and help out. William returned to the oil fields with investor Mr. Oscar Cooper of New York 1936; a successful operation was underway (with 9 active wells in the fields of Goldsboro, Texas) when he found it necessary to have a gall stone operation in Dallas where he died. He and Lilian are buried at Restland Cemetery, Dallas.

Goldsboro, Texas oil fields (William Fenton Tyree officiating) to Elinor Louise Falder b. 3-21-

1918 in Kenton, Tenn. (but who moved to Dallas, Texas at the age of 4). Andrew moved to Dallas with his paternal family when he was 12; he planned to be a doctor and with this in mind

he attended Southern Methodist University for 3 1/2 years; but when his family suffered financial reverses, he dropped out of school to take a job and help. Added part time studies

fitted him for office management; when Elinor's step-father died leaving an unshepherded business in Miami, Florida, he took on the family responsibility of Modern Metal Craftsmen. Although this was a piece work sheet metal shop (and needed as such during the remaining period of the Second World War), after the War Andy developed an aluminum building panel, put it on an assembly line and shipped his product far afield. He bought the company from his

mother-in-law, changed the name to Panelfab and went into a partnership with Arthur Vining

Davis interests; he sold out in 1967 and retired to boat the Bahamas. The Bahamas was

undergoing a exciting international development. For a time Andrew was Director of Sales for

the Grand Bahama Development Company but when Pindling came into political power with his goal of "Bahamas for the Bahamians", the opportunities faded; many people lost their

investments. After 2 years Andrew and Elinor moved back to Miami. With his Bahamian

boating experience, Andrew became a partner in a yacht sales business. Elinor, who had gone back to school in the early 60's and earned a teaching certificate, tried teaching school but

soon turned to selling real-estate. In 1981 Elinor sold the yacht sales (in which Andrew had

bought out his partner) and they retired -- for the second and last time WHEN ELINOR BEGAN THIS TYREE WRITING.

Maxine has spent the better part of her life in Blue Bell working with foster children.

Eunice visited Ansted in 1931 and left a written account of “Aunt Angie & Aunt Mamie”, “Aunt Annie and Gertrude” whom she said had moved into the Half Way House with Janie who appeared to be completely under the Imboden influence (Gertrude was Aunt Angie’s niece; Angie had been married to George Imboden before she married Mr. Taylor) (Bill Bragg said Halfway House was sold to Gertrude Davis; her daughter Janie Kessler now owns it); also “Gussie” spoke of “Clyde” and of course others more easily placed.

Inez Buffington Ryan b. 2-15-1895 Huntington, V. Wa., was editor with National Geographic in

Washington, D.C., never married, d. 9-18-1957.

Paul Adlai Tyree b. 10-3-1877 Wapella, Ill., d. 4-28-1901 Ansted, W. Va., childless, buried in Tyree graveyard, Ansted.

Mary Frances Tyree b. 1-12-1839, d. 2-21-1889 m. 12-8-1859 Col. George W. Imboden (b. 6-25-1836, d. 1-8--1922). They settled in the Staunton area where he practiced law until the Civil War during which he served the Confederacy, rising through the ranks to Colonel. He distinguished himself in the 18th Cavalry, C.S.A. by covering Lee’s retreat 7-5-1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg. After the War they lived in Crittendon Co., Ky. from Sept. 1866 to the summer of 1869; they then moved to the Hawks Nest area and bought the comfortable home just west of town that is today known as “Contentment” and serves as the County Museum. George became an immediate leader in his community, served as Mayor, etc. He introduced Professor David Ansted (an English geologist searching for coal) to these hills of W. Va. When Ansted’s backers decided to make Hawk’s Nest their base of operations, the town was named Ansted. Among others, William Tyree invested -- money and 900A in stock, payable on a 1st mortgage basis. When the Company failed, George went to work for the Fayetteville Bank; William began the long process of trying to straighten out his estate often with George’s help. George and Mary had no children of their own; but Mary’s niece, the toddler Willia chose to live with them and did until Mary died in 1889. George married 2nd, Dec. 1889 in Richmond, to Angelina M. Dickinson, dau. of Hudson M. Dickinson and Betty Ann Lancroft. George and Angie had one child, Mary Virginia Imboden b. 10-18-1890 who died in infancy. Following George’s death, “Angie” m. Andrew J. Taylor, lumberman and owner of the grocery store in Ansted. They may have had a son, Clyde Taylor.

Joseph McClung Tyree b. 8-9-1840, d. 1920, m. 1st Oct. 15, 1869 (George W. Young officiating) to Mary E. Murrell b. 1852 Nelson County, dau. C.S. Murrell & Elizabeth; m. 2nd 1878 Sarah Emilie Dickinson b. 1840 (who said 1842?), d. 1929, dau. of Hudson M. Dickinson and Elizabeth. Joseph inherited the Tyree Tavern when his father died in 1883 plus all the legal problems which still plagued it. Joseph turned to George Imboden who attempted to consummate sales William had started years before; but it was hard to get the sales to hold in court. Finally in 1886 they managed to put the property in Joseph’s name; and Sallie and Joseph operated the property as an inn until they died.

Cora M. Stinett (adopted; listed age 9 in Fayette Co. Census 1880). Cora lived next door to Janie in 1931.

Janie C. Tyree b. 1879; never married; but came home from a trip to Charleston, pregnant. The child was born and accepted into Joseph’s family; meanwhile Janie became ill and had to have her pallot removed; she never left home again. Janie inherited the Tyree Tavern when her father died and immediately made efforts to sell it. Again there were problems with sales; finally, April 19, 1926, Janie successfully sold the property to a James Massey of Charleston. However, Janie seems later to have signed the property over to Gertrude Davis (?was this “Angie’s” niece, Gertrude?) sometime after 1931. Today it is owned by Janice Kessler, Gertrude’s daughter.

Kemper Tyree b. Mar. 1899, left home to become a trucker in Charleston; married, d. childless; grandfather Joseph left him 100A across from Tyree Tavern.

Willia “Willie” A. Tyree b. Jan. 1881, m. Henry Skaggs. She preserved the much abused Tyree Family Bible in her log house in Ansted. Eunice Tyree Ryan reported that “Aunt Rosie left Willia a ring” -- ?the same Rosie whom the family said left $250,000 to Morris Harvey College? NINA WILLS COMBES, E-mail (ncombes@m-), says she visited “Willa” Tyree Skaggs 1979 in Ansted and found her sharp and congenial; Willia d. 1980 at 100 years of age.

George William Tyree b. 12-9-1841, d. 6-16-1842 at 6 mo., buried Old Stone House graveyard beside his mother.

Charlie William Tyree b. 1-9-1850 was half-brother to William Tyree's other children, d. 1916, m. 10-25-1876 Botetourt Co., to Mary M. "Mamie" Godwin b. 1852, dau. F. M. Godwin. They were living in Kanawha County for the Census of 1880; in 1881 it was said Charlie and his wife Mamie were living with father William in the old Tyree Tavern. It has been written that “Aunt Mamie” left the Old Stone House to live in the home of with a Dr. Beall when she was 80. There were no children in this marriage.

.................................................................................................................................................

Rebecca Tyree b. probably 11-1-1809 (according to the misused Family Bible she was b. 11-1-1820 but it became increasingly necessary to find more reliable birth years for these 9 children; and for Rebecca I have used the 1850 Greenbrier Census). She m. Robert Dunlap b. 1796 of Greenbrier Co., son of Alexander Dunlap. Robert seems to have died before 1850; and the Greenbrier Census of 1850 records Rebecca Dunlap as living in Mr. George Buster’s small hotel -- along with another female guest, two Physicians and a barkeeper; she was 41 years old (with a birthday due after the Census was taken?). She died in Greenbrier and is buried in the Old Stone Church (Presbyterian) graveyard in Lewisburg, W. Va. Childless.

John Tyree b. 7-19-1812/1813, d. 1879, m. 5-19-1842 Elizabeth McClung b. 10-7-1824 dau. of John “Lame John” McClung and Deborah Rader (also 2nd cousins to John’s brothers’ (Frank and William) wives; Elizabeth’s bro. was Fielding McClung who m. John’s sister Sarah. In 1845 John bought 560A in Muddlety (about 4 miles N.W. of Summersville); he rebuilt the dwelling there in 1861 which continued in his family for generations. He also served a term as assessor of Nicholas County, where he lived and died, 1879; Elizabeth survived until 1894. (John was given no notation at all in the Bible. Beckley’s Post Herald 3-10-1967, listed birth dates for all 9 Tyree siblings; but John was given the same year as bro. George; they had separate but too close month and days. I saved his month and day but put his year aside. William Fenton Tyree accepted him as the last son b. 1819, after his genealogy gathering visit with his old Uncle Joe; but descendants of bro. Samuel claim Samuel was the last son. I temporarily put John in this conveniently vacant time spot where no other birth was listed. Whee! Nicholas Co. Census of 1870 confirms the spot, saying he was then 57, making him b. 1812 if the Census taker came before July 19 and b. 1813 if the Census taker came after July 19.) Same census also lists him as a farmer with real estate valued at $5,000. After John’s death, Elizabeth seems to have gone to Kansas to be near her bro. Fielding McClung and her daughter Sarah Rebecca; she d. there 1891.

Sarah Rebecca Tyree b. 1844, m. c. 1862 Charles A. McClung b. 3-5-1838, son of Anthony McClung & Martha Woods; they lived Muddlety, W. George H. Tyree (Dr.) b. 10-15-1816 (according to Tyree Bible, which is probably correct for him since he lived near Ansted, Willia and the Bible until 1881 when Dr. Woodson Andrew Tyree returned to Ansted and bought his Uncle George’s farm). George m. 1-20-1848 Eloise A. Dickenson b. 1830, dau. of Hudson M. Dickinson (who used to ride into Lewisburg for schooling along with George’s brother William) and Betty Ann Landcraft. During the Civil War, George was one of 47 members of the 10th Company of the 142nd Virginia Militia, organized in Fayette Co. George seems to have farmed and served in some medical capacity. The book, The History of Fayette County, West Virginia, 1993, p. 87 places him as an early settler of Fayetteville (there was a H.M. Dickinson on the list also -- who was probably George’s fathr-in-law); p. 85 places him in Ansted where he is listed as Dr. George Tyree (the well known Dr. Henry B. Dickinson was on that list and was probably the mentor for George); p. 62 says his farm was across New River from Ansted, “up the red bank which overlooked the hill, going down to Miller’s Ferry” (sometimes called Cotton Hill). After George’s nephew, Woodson Andrew Tyree (a medical graduate from the University of Virginia and one of the first licensed doctors), returned to Ansted to help the overburdened (by the influx of miners) Dr. Henry B. Dickinson, George sold 1881 his nephew his farm and moved to Columbia, Indiana to join his son Walter J. Tyree in Walter’s drug store business. George died 3-31-1883 at the home of his son Dr. Walter Tyree; Eloise had died 8-1-1877. (Hmm, George and his nephew Joseph Tyree, son of William, married sisters.)
