JEREMY

I. INTRODUCTION

A. According to a Dallas Morning News article, A Richardson High School Sophomore, described as a loner, fatally shot himself Tuesday morning in front of a classroom of nearly 30 students. Suicide is a thought that should never enter a person’s mind. It is an unfair and selfish way to end problems large or small.

B. Although it should never be considered it is a fact that people and people in this room have had suicidal thoughts. The loneliness, hurt and anger that usually accompanies suicidal tendencies are hopeless emotions that no individual should have to endure.

C. The purpose of my speech today is to tell you about the song Jeremy by Pearl Jam.

D. I will first explain the artist and song facts, then I will tell you the story of the song and finally reveal the lessons that we can all learn from this song.

II. BODY

A. Song and Artist Facts

1. According to Pearl Jam’s first name was Mookie Blaylock after the basketball player from the New York Nets. Blaylocks number was 10 so the first album that Pearl Jam released was titled 10 and featured the song “Jeremy” along with 2 other hit songs “Alive” and “Even Flow”.

2. It was this album that brought Pearl Jam as a front runner in alternative Grunge Rock bands.

3. According to this album was created to discuss “dark” issues such as depression, loneliness, suicide and murder many issues that were not discussed at the time.

4. The song Jeremy discussed the horrific topic of suicide. This song was inspired by the true story Jeremy Delle who on Aug 7th, 1990 committed suicide.

5. This song led to much of Pearl Jam’s success and the video was nominated for 3 MTV music awards after the band was forced to create an edited version of the fist video, that many felt was too appalling to watch.

I have just explained some artist facts now I will explain the story of the song.

B. Story of the Song

1. The news article featured in the Dallas Newspaper the morning after the incident reveals that a 16 year old boy shot and killed himself. The article continues with saying that because he had missed class, the teacher in his second-period English class told Jeremy to get an admittance slip from the school office. Instead, he returned with the gun,. Police said. He walked directly to the front of the classroom of 30 students looked at his teacher and said, 'Miss, I got what I really went for,' then placed the barrel in his mouth and fired."

2. If just listening to this song, I’m not sure that we would fully understand the song. Watching the music video is what gives the song more deep meaning and understanding. In the song it talks about a boy who is bullied by his classmates. That he feels unloved and unwanted, as the lyrics state, Daddy didn’t give attention to the fact that Mommy didn’t care. The lyrics also tell us that Jeremy fought back against the bullies the song states “He hit me with a surprised left, my jaw left hurting, dropped wide open.” Fight back against the bullies wasn’t enough Jeremy thought that the ultimate revenge against his bullies was committing suicide, for all of them to witness. And as they lyrics say, “Jeremy spoke in class today.”

I have just told you the story of the song, now I will explain the life lessons.

C. Lessons

1. This song helps us understand two important issues, Bullying and suicide. According to in 2010 about one in seven students is either a bully or has been a victim of bullying. This website also coins the term bullicide, which is bullying that result in the suicide a victim, such as Jeremy Delle’s situation. The statistics from this cite report that there is a strong connection between being bullied and suicide. And with suicide on the rise in adolescents growing more than 50 percent in the last 30 years. We should all be aware that we can be the change of the future.

2. If you have ever bullied someone you should be ashamed of yourself. Stand up for those who are experiencing the loneliness, hurt and anger that you could be the cause of.

3. If you see someone being bullied stand up for what is right, maybe tell an adult or tell the bully to stop.

4. Finally be a friend. Be that positive in someone’s life so that they don’t endure those hopeless emotions that could result in a traumatic death.
