Course Overview

COURSE DESCRIPTION

IN THIS COURSE STUDENTS WILL BECOME FAMILIAR WITH ETHICAL STANDARDS FOR HUMAN SERVICE WORKERS AS OUTLINED BY THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR HUMAN SERVICES (NOHS). AN EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON UNDERSTANDING CONCEPTS OF LEAST INTRUSIVE INTERVENTION, LEAST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT, FACILITATING CLIENT SELF-DETERMINATION, APPROPRIATE PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARY MAINTENANCE, AND EMPLOYING INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM APPROACHES TO PROBLEM-SOLVING. STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF REQUIREMENTS FOR CLIENT CONFIDENTIALITY, ELECTRONIC RECORD KEEPING, AND PORTABILITY OF CLIENT INFORMATION. (3 CREDITS). PREREQUISITES: BSHS/305, BSHS/325; COMM/215 OR EQUIVALENT, MTH/209 OR EQUIVALENT.

TOPICS AND OBJECTIVES

WEEK ONE: INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN SERVICES ETHICS

• Define the role of ethics in the human services profession.

• Compare codes of ethics and standards of practice of major human service organizations.

• Compare decision-making models

• Apply decision-making models

• Explain how ethical dilemmas occur when personal values interact with professional standards.

Week Two: Ethics and the Client–Counselor Relationship

• Explain the counselor’s role in the facilitation of client self-determination, in least intrusive intervention and in least restrictive environment.

• Describe informed consent.

• Describe the client’s right to confidentiality.

• Explain how duty to warn and duty to protect create a dilemma between ethics and law.

• Explain the importance of maintaining accurate and complete client records.

• Recognize the connection between multicultural competence and ethical behavior.

Week Three: Counselor–Client Boundaries, Professional Training, and Competence

• Describe the purpose of boundaries.

• Explain the inclusion of multiple and social relationships in ethical codes.

• Evaluate various sources of continuing professional education.

• Analyze the importance of professional competence in the provision of human services.

Week Four: Ethical Issues Involving Couples and Family Therapy, Group Work, and Community Work

• Examine the AAMFT Code of Ethics.

• Identify ethical issues that arise when working with couples and families, groups, and community work.

• Define ethical issues that arise when working with couples and families, groups, and community work.

Week Five: Issues in Supervision and Consultation and Theory to Practice

• Explain the legal responsibilities of the supervisory relationship.

• Compare the types of ethical issues that can occur in supervisory and consultant relationships.

• Explore techniques and theories of counseling and explain their application in practice.

• Describe how counseling techniques are used in human services.

• Describe the concept of evidence-based practice.

Discussion Questions

1. THROUGH SELF-EXAMINATION FOCUS ON YOUR OWN MOTIVATION AND BEHAVIORS. IDENTIFY ANY SUBTLE WAY YOU MIGHT BE ETHICALLY UNAWARE OR INSENSITIVE AT TIMES. HOW WOULD YOU APPROACH CHANGING THESE IN THE FUTURE?

2. Identify one form of counter-transference you might struggle with. How would you deal with this in an ethical and effective manner?

3. What would you do if you saw a friend who worked in the helping professions violate his or her Code of Ethics. What steps would you follow to address this situation? What are your obligations as outlined in your Code of Ethics?

4. Are there situations in which self-disclosure may be appropriate in the Human Services field? Describe a situation in which this would be appropriate. What does your Code of Ethics say about self-disclosure?

REQUIRED Learning Activities

TITLE OF ACTIVITY: PERSONAL VALUES

Objective: Explain how ethical dilemmas occur when personal values interact with professional standards.

Suggested Time: 30 min.

Facilitating Instructions:

1. Break the class into groups of 4 to 5 students.

2. Assign the groups either “The Case of Paul” or “The Case of Reggie” on pp. 90–91 in Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions.

3. Ask students to read and discuss the cases.

4. Bring the class back together and facilitate a class discussion on the cases. Would these cases be appropriate to refer out to another health services worker? Did either case have any ethical implications? How might the students react if they were put in a similar situation?

OPTIONAL Learning Activities

TITLE OF ACTIVITY: CODE OF ETHICS COMPARISON

Objective: Compare codes of ethics and standards of practice of major human service organizations.

Suggested Time: 30 min.

Facilitating Instructions:

1. Divide the class into Learning Teams.

2. Ask each team to conduct an Internet search to find the code of ethics for two organizations outlined on pp. 40–41 of Issues and Ethics in the Helping Professions.

3. Have the teams review and compare the codes for the two organizations.

4. Bring the class back together and facilitate a class discussion on the similarities and differences between different organizations and their code of ethics.
