The Seven Social Roles of a Citizen
The Seven Social Roles of a Citizen
Civics
Mr. Griffith
Background:
As a citizen of this nation you are expected to play many roles, sometimes you must play several at a time. The seven social roles of a citizen are as follows:
← 1.) Self – that would be you
← 2.) Citizen – following the rules of this nation
← 3.) Worker / Student – contributing to the nation, or you will (income tax)
← 4.) Family Member – your place in your own family
← 5.) Social Group Member – people at school / work / neighbors you interact with
← 6.) Friend – a group that relies on you
← 7.) Consumer – you purchase things to help this nation’s economy (and pay
sales tax in this state)
These seven roles interact with each other and sometimes conflict with each other. I cannot do whatever I want anymore or just hang out with my friends because I am a father, I am married, and I have a job, and so on. You might have a job, be a student, and play sports that can cause conflicts in your schedule. You must decide what the best way to be a good citizen is.
Objective:
This country is filled with problems and breakdowns on all levels of society. How can that be traced back to these seven roles?
- Choose a problem facing the United States.
- Trace the problem back to a failure in one of the seven social roles.
- Decide if it is a failure of a particular role, or
- If there is too much of a conflict within two or more roles.
Take a look at these roles closely and decide whether or not it is too hard to follow all of them and in what situations. Obviously people live with hardships and cannot follow this “American Dream” without some sort of conflict or problem.
