THE LION KING For me, The Lion King is the perfect movie to watch on a flight, because I really wanted to see it, but what with birthdays and weddings, I just couldn't make it to the cinema when it was on. And now, I can watch it on a flight. With even better photo-realistic computer animation than Disney's recent Jungle Book (also helmed by white-hot director Jon Favreau), with a stellar cast including James Earl Jones, Beyonc?, Seth Rogen, John Oliver and Donald Glover, and with an enormous budget of USD260 million, this new Lion King promises much. Grossing USD1.6 billion, it has become the most successful animated movie of all time (Frozen had to let it go), but does it match the 1994 original?

Not only is the animation astonishing, it suggests that ever-evolving computer animation is going to reach unbelievable heights, and very soon. It paints the landscape with the realism of a nature documentary while also carrying the artistry of the dazzling Broadway version. Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar is a revelation, and with a voice like that, he would have my vote as the new Lion King.

Both the old and the new Lion King are not my favourite Disney musicals (Little Mermaid for me). I just can't understand why these aggressive carnivores never eat anything, not even snacking on an impala. But that musical might be a bit too terrifying for kids. So apart from that, The Lion King is the perfect movie for a flight

THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN I really didn't think I was going to like this film. It has a talking dog, which is always a disaster because, well, pets can't actually talk. The beauty of pets is that they are not human, they are something better than that, and yet, no matter how much we love them and miss them when they are gone, they're also not nearly as bright as we imagine them to be. Pets live in the moment; they don't dwell on the past or think about the distant future. My pets had dignity, playfulness and gave unwavering companionship. I want to see that, so I didn't think I'd like a movie about a talking dog. And yet, as soon as Kevin Costner's voice-over began as the elderly dog Enzo, I was utterly gripped and moved, remembering my pets, my life, and I really needed to scratch my cat.

The Art Of Racing In The Rain is a simple tale of a young race car driver, his career, his loves and deep tragedy, all spent with his dog Enzo. Without his dog, this young man's life would be yet another anonymous domestic drama, but for his dog (as these things are for all our pets) this is the only story in the world because these are the only lives that matter.

We never see him, but this movie is all about Kevin Costner. His sage-like voice-over imbues the dog Enzo with an incongruous humanity but also with a dog's true nature of living in the moment, like a race car driver who concentrates purely on the turn ahead. Costner's voice make this dog's old soul believable and dignified. If you've ever had and lost a pet, then you will enjoy The Art Of Racing In The Rain.

SHAFT Samuel L. Jackson has played the character of Shaft before, but the original was Richard Roundtree who played the leather-coated New York private detective in a series of films in the 1970s. Shaft was the most famous of a genre of movies called `blacksploitation', which offered black heroes, both male and female, who were unapologetically black for a mainly black audience. Shaft became successful with a wider audience because the hero was so cool and because the theme song is possibly the greatest theme song ever. It's hard to imagine where Quentin Tarantino would find any inspiration if Shaft didn't exist.

For the remakes of Shaft, there could only have been Samuel L. Jackson in the title role, but his first outing was silly, loud and pointless, with the movie striving too hard to be cool without investing in creating interesting characters. But this new Shaft is funny and exciting, with more up-to-date sensitivities without striving to be too cool (I don't think anybody walks away from an explosion in slow motion).

In this new Shaft, the great detective is suddenly reunited with his FBI son whom he hasn't seen since he was a baby. And then later, we add another generation of Shafts with the return of the original, Richard Roundtree. It's the kind of movie where the plot is not very important, where the bad guys never seem to be able to shoot straight, but the good guys do. Basically, the movie is just that ? great fun.

Despite their personality differences, Shaft agrees to help so that he can settle a score with

a certain drug lord.
