EARLY ROME STUDY GUIDE

This sheet should be used only as a study aid. Remember that it is your responsibility to reread the chapter and to know all the ideas covered in it.

Test Date: Tuesday, February 9th

The test will cover information from the following sources:

1. Chapter 8, Section 1 (pages 226-230) of History of Our World text

2. The following handouts: “Geography,” “Romulus and Remus,” “The Etruscans and the Beginnings of Rome”, “Horatius at the Bridge,” and “Roman Gods/Goddesses.”

3. Class notes

While studying for your test, make sure to know the answers to the following questions.

• What was the geography of Rome? How did it affect the success of Rome?

• Who were the early people of Italy? What influence did they have on later Rome?

• According to legend, who founded Rome? What does the legend reveal about how the Romans viewed themselves?

• Who was the pater familias? What was his job?

• What was Rome originally? What was its original form of government? What did they change their government to?

• What was the motto of the Roman Republic?
