CHANDLER, Arizona, January 26, 1988 ? Microchip Technology Incorporated (formerly the microelectronics division of General Instrument Corp.) today announced the appointment of Ronald C. Norris as executive vice president and chief operating officer. Norris will report directly to Donald R. Sorchych, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Microchip Technology.

"I am particularly pleased to make this announcement," said Sorchych, "as Ron's extensive experience in managing semiconductor operations in both the U.S. and overseas dovetails extremely well with our current and future marketing plans. We moved from division to subsidiary status last month, and Ron will be a key player in completing all the elements of that transition."

Norris will be directly responsible for manufacturing operations, operations support, engineering, and new product development.

Norris has total of more than 15 years of experience in the management of semiconductor operations. Most recently he was executive vice president and general manager of Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation's Asia and Memory Products Unit based in Tokyo, Japan. Prior to that appointment he was vice president and general manager of Fairchild's Memory and High-Speed Logic Division in Puyallup, Washington.

Norris received an MS in physics from the University of Arkansas and a BS in physics from Sam Houston State University. He replaces Bernhard J. Rohrbacher, who died last year after a long battle with cancer.

Microchip Technology Incorporated, headquartered in Chandler, Arizona, is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Instrument Corporation, and is a high technology supplier of programmable nonvolatile memory, microcontroller, digital signal
