About the Cranford Virtual History Center

“...let us save what remains: not by vaults and locks which fence them from the public eye and use in consigning them to the waste of time, but by such a multiplication of copies, as shall place them beyond the reach of accident.”

— Thomas Jefferson, February 18, 1791

The Cranford Virtual History Center is a proposed digital library initiative which aims to present content and research tools to allow users to understand the community of Cranford and its history. The project aims to allow users to have greater access to content about Cranford in one digital library as an access point collections held across several organizations, which include the Cranford Historical Society, Cranford Public Library, other historical and library organizations, and make available content in a digital format, as available. The talented and dedicated members of these organizations will be consulted as the proposal takes shape.

The specific aims of the project are to focus on the “aboutness” of Cranford New Jersey and its development as a community. It seeks to support preservation and interpretation objectives in protecting Cranford’s rich and unique history. It will be freely accessible and will be a resource for users such as local residents, students, teachers, local history aficionados, genealogists, museums, researchers and reference librarians. The library is a resource for people to make connections between the town’s history, development and the town’s relevance to the outside “beyond Cranford” world.

The project is being undertaken as part of a course in Digital Libraries offered at Rutgers University in the Fall of 2010. It is fitting to embark on this effort, as 2010 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the Cranford Public Library. A collaborative digital library effort, seems a fitting way to start the next 100 hundreds years of contribution to the community. This will be a virtual collection of materials related to the town of Cranford, New Jersey, USA. Materials included are bibliographic information, indexes, pamphlets, newsletters, audio recordings, research projects, maps, images, sculpture and decorative items that all relate to Cranford past and present.

Cranford is a welcoming and peaceful community with many unique features that make it special. People return to Cranford throughout their lives, and we hope that this digital library facilitates those journeys Located 17 miles from New York City; Cranford was developed as an ideal suburban community. Interesting landmarks, such as an observatory, a historic mill, canoe club, river, train line, gazebo, fascinating architecture, Works Progress Administration murals, museum, library, Historic Tree Garden are all found within a mere 4.82 square miles.

Wish list of Donations and Services Needed

The Historical Society does not use this practice today. I identified three organizations similar to the Cranford Historical Society and shared the models. A proposed version for the Historical society, based on the three follows.

-

-

-

We are dedicated to expanding our collection so that it represents all aspects of our community. Something doesn’t have to be old to be an artifact. It can be an item used yesterday as easily as a Victorian chair. It is the stories an artifact can tell that make it interesting. The Cranford Historical Society is looking for artifacts to expand their collection and current displays for their museum at Crane Philips House. LOANS: if you have any of the items on our list but you don’t want to donate it, if you are willing to let the Historical Society borrow it, please contact us. Have an artifact to donate? All artifact donations must be pre-screened by our Acquisitions Committee. Please email a description and photo, if possible, to < > or leave a message at .

Among the items we’d like to acquire are…

Politics

Ballots from Cranford elections before 1960.

Political pamphlets from before 1950. These need to be Cranford-related. Those from national or state elections are fine if they were issued by political parties in Cranford.

Businesses

Medicine bottles from Cranford drug stores.

Menus or matchbooks from Cranford restaurants (pre-1970.)

Flyers, postcards, price lists, etc, from Cranford businesses before 1960.

Paper Items

Programs from Cranford Churches (pre-1960)

Advertisements, pamphlets, programs, etc. from the Prohibition campaigns (pre 1920) including material from the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and Anti-Saloon League (ASL)

Postcards of local businesses.

Odds and Ends

Any fossils dug in Cranford.

Antique toys in reasonable condition are welcome if the original owner was a child in Cranford.

Artifacts related to families moving to the Cranford area, for example, a suitcase, travel paperwork, items brought from their former place of residence, and family photos

Children’s clothing.

World Wide Web Site is copyrighted by the Wisconsin Historical Society unless otherwise indicated. It is for the personal use of students, scholars, and the public.

The nature of historical archival collections means that copyright or other information about restrictions may be difficult to determine. Whenever possible, the Wisconsin Historical Society provides information about copyright owners and other restrictions in the catalog records, finding aids, and donor records. The Society provides such information as a service to aid patrons in determining the appropriate use of an item, but the legal determination ultimately rests with the patron.

Images reproduced from the collections of the Wisconsin Historical Society are for viewing and personal use only. Permission for commercial use or any publication, manipulation, display or distribution is only granted by written application to the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Send your requests to the Society's Administrator by completing this form.

2. Permission to reproduce, publish, broadcast, display, or distribute an item or text must be requested in writing. Permission is granted in writing, not orally. Possession of an item does not constitute permission to reproduce or publish it.

3. Permission is for one-time use only. The Wisconsin Historical Society retains all rights to the items or text, and the requester warrants that they will not be used for any purpose other than that listed on this permission form.

4. In some cases, the Wisconsin Historical Society will request that a copy of the publication be donated to the Society.

5. The person requesting permission must secure copyright clearance from the copyright holder, if known. In requesting permission to reproduce materials from the collections of the Society, the requester agrees to hold harmless the Wisconsin Historical Society, its officers and employees from any action involving infringement of the rights of any person or heirs and descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.

6. Images may be cropped to suit design and layout, but they may not be altered or drawn upon or manipulated in any way so that they look different from the way they appear in the historical collection.
