No. 262 March 2013

Programs and Workshops Bethanne Nemesh

A special thank you to all who participated in the Great Pillowcase Race! Everyone had a wonderful playful attitude, rolled with the punches and seemed to have a lot of fun. We made 79 pillow cases with several handfuls of partials which will also get finished up (another 45)! A special thanks to Maxine Bernstein for demonstrating and for taking the cases home for washing, pressing, and delivery!

Our program in March should also be a lot of fun as we get to go shopping!! The Quilt Block Inc of Exton, Pa store owners Jan and Cynthia will be doing a lecture called "Ruler Mania". They will be demonstrating 4 to 6 of the new rulers on the market from Creative Grid including Dresden Plate for strip cutting, Easy Circle, Lazy Angle, binding tools, and much more. They will be bringing some of the shop with a focus on precuts like Moda jelly rolls and layer cakes.

If you are still thinking about participating in the Twister workshop, they will have some of those as well in addition to charm packs of fabric. They will be set up for cash, check, and credit.

Workshop, TWISTER, 3/23/13, with Bethanne Nemesh

We are nearly sold out of the Twister workshop! I have 2 more seats...and 5 folks who need to pay. As a gentle reminder...Carol Willis and friend, Marya Amig, Nancy Skok, and Jeanne Schroder... contact me.

This workshop will not only be on How to use a Twister ruler. You could read directions and likely figure that out. I am going to teach you some tricks on organization to keep all your twists from becoming the mother of all jigsaw puzzles, chaining your twists to avoid multiple trips to the iron as well as manipulating your colors and fabrics to free you from ever having to buy a pattern or book on the topic. Plus there is the fun of just getting together!

Workshop, LAYERED AND SLASHED FABRICS with Christine Morgan, 4/3/13, $25 fee

We still have 8 seats available for this amazing workshop. You will be making Christine's layered and slashed "pelts" to take home and wash as the first step of her amazing layered appliqué process. Then for a kit fee of $20, you will be given pre washed pelts, felt, and all the supplies needed to make a small wall leaf wall hanging. See a sample on the program board at the back of the meeting next month! I will open this workshop to non-members after the March meeting, so if you are interested, sign up now.

Workshop, FIESTA MEXICO HAND APPLIQUE with Karen Kay Buckley, 6/5/13, $35 to guild, $24 to teacher for patterns.

Please note...you won't be getting just any ole' pattern! You will be getting ALL the patterns for the ENTIRE Fiesta Mexico quilt! Basically a whole book! You will be learning KKB's amazing hand appliqué, smooth curves, perfect circles, bias bar stems and lines and more. We have 13 spots filled with up to 12 more available.

Workshop, BOUNTIFUL BOUQUETS. . .MACHINE APPLIQUE with Jane Sassaman, a 2 day workshop, 8/6 and 8/7, $75

Students will be involved in an intensive design course with Jane and using her Free Spirit fabrics that you bring or buy, learn her innovative machine appliqué in a broderie perse style to create a unique project. A full materials list for this class is on Jane's website under "workshops". We have space for 20 students, and 7 are taken...so come one, come all! We have 2 outside guild students already interested, so at some point I will make unsold seats available to them.

Raffle Quilt Creation

Many thanks to those who have already completed their blocks for our next raffle quilt! As a reminder...all blocks are due at the April meeting so that I and my fairies can do final assembly and I can start quilting it early this summer!

Shopping for Fabric Crazy Quilter

By the Crazy Quilter

I love shopping for fabric. Seriously. Well, who among us quilters does not. I was in a quilt shop last week and bought a selection of coordinated designs from a new collection that I had to have. We all do this when a line of fabric speaks to us. It's a great start to a quilt. Buying a complete line of fabric makes life easy when it comes to putting a quilt together. However, I think working this way is too easy - safe in fact. It works, but it makes for a predictable quilt.

So, here is what I bought last week any why I bought it. In the quilt shop, I spotted the new line of fabric and there was, as there often is, an entire stack of fat quarters precut for my convenience. I carried that bundle around for awhile until I realized that the entire collection would give me 20 examples of much of the same thing. When that thought occurred to me I put the bundle back on the shelf. Instead, I selected just 10 of the bolts that I liked best which gave me enough of the line to tell the story. How much did I buy? Generally, when I buy off the bolt I buy 1/2 yard cuts. If I buy just a 1/4 yard I'm likely to use it all. Heaven forbid! For the work I like to do (mostly scrappy) 1/2 a yard is enough since I like to use lots of fabrics in a quilt. I will likely have some fabric left over to use again or to donate or to make something for community service. So, on this trip I bought 1/2 yard cuts. Did I say that I like to use lots of fabrics in a quilt? Right. Those 10 fabrics I bought won't be nearly enough for a quilt of mine. I fully intend to add to that group which happened to be in shades of brown, cheddar, and orange. I may add some darker brown, or some black, and maybe a little red or a lighter orange and maybe a plaid or a larger scale print in similar (not the same) colors. I'm not sure yet, but adding to it will be so much fun! And adding to that collection is going to make a better quilt.

So buy those fat quarter bundles or 1/2 yard cuts or whatever yardage works best for you. But, if you do prefer buying from collections, try adding a little more to it. Be your own designer. You will find that your quilts will have a little more interest to them, a little sparkle, some pizzazz, the wow factor. And, you might need another trip to the quilt shop!

Some of you may not know that the Guild has our own pin. I will have them available to sell at the next meeting for $5 each. Look for the display.

Last month we had three visitors: Judy Hartzell, Claire Coakley and Cassie Flemming.

At our December meeting we also had three visitors: Laura Suarez, Jane Frownfelker and Eileen Gorzelic.

I hope we will be seeing them at the next meeting.

Remembering Rachel Tamm Editor

Just recently, Rachel Tamm, one of the original founders of our guild passes away at the age of 94. Rachel, during her stay at the guild, did hold the office of President. Only because she no longer was able to get to the meetings did she stop attending. Those who knew her remember her decisiveness in addition to being an” inspiring and sweet woman.” She was a “definite asset to the guild and always found another quilt to give” for charitable purposes.

From the President

Julie Borden

Happy Almost Spring,

March is right around the corner. Let’s hope it brings spring like the groundhog said. I am sorry I missed the last meeting. I heard the room was buzzing with activity and everyone enjoyed the evening. What a great idea for all to get together and work for a great cause. As Maxine’s letters stated, our sewing does make a difference to the kids and to their families

As some of you may know I will be having hip surgery again in late February. I will not be at the March meeting and may miss the April one as well. In my absence Bethanne will run the meeting and help out with the presidential duties.

One responsibility that needs to be done in the month of March is to appoint a nominating committee. This is not a big job. We need just a few people to talk with members to see who might be interested in filling one of the positions that will be open at the end of the year. The positions that will be open are President, Secretary and Treasurer. I already have someone who is willing to take on the Membership position and Bethanne and Nancy have another year of Programs and Workshops. Please take some time and consider helping with this task. Also please consider helping our guild by offering to take one of the open positions. Each job has its own responsibilities but none of them are all that involved. If you have any questions about any of the jobs just ask me or the member who currently is in the position.

I want to thank everyone who provided the much needed "bitty" teddy bears for the NICU at Lehigh Valley Hospital. As Julie reported, the NICU has had an overflow of preemies with 40 babies. On that note, this month, March, we will be collecting preemie quilts for the unit. If we all did just one quilt, that would make a really nice donation.

For April, if you have a veterans quilt that needs to be completed, let that be your goal and we can collectively deliver them to the Veterans Clinic in Allentown.

Project Linus quilts for Camp Erin will be collected in May.

I recently saw a large collection of bee fabric, which made me wonder if Lulu might have taken up bee keeping. I wonder if any of you have thought of making something risqué. Did Lulu turn the hay mow into a place of ill repute, and advertise "A Romp in the Hay with Lulu?"

Thanks for all who brought in stamps for the hospitalized vets.

Thank you the Julie Mc Donell and her committee, Karen Landis, Diane Pesola, Diana Campbell, Linda Herman and Jackie Leipert for the delicious refreshments at our July meeting.

I will be the coordinator for August's volunteers who will be Irene Oehmke, Pat Haberle, Kathryn Heffrich, Karen Hartzell and Becky Marx.

Our September meeting with its Anniversary Potluck Supper is fast approaching.  Everyone is asked to bring a food item (protein, pasta, fruit, vegetable, dessert, or drink).  Plugging in pots is discouraged for safety reasons. We have tablecloths but our tradition has been to bring our own place settings and to make individual tables more festive, flower arrangements for the table.  Put on your thinking caps as to what you will prepare and sign up to bring your specialty at our next month's meeting.  Thanks.

Our guild has over 90 members and it should not fall on the shoulders of just a few to make it a successful. If you have been a member for 5 years or more and have not taken on some responsibility it is time you do. It’s a great way to give back a little of what you get from being a guild member and it’s a great way to get to know other members.

Hopefully I’ll see you all soon and hopefully it will be without the use of my cane.
