double by Whit Merrifield, who had his MLB best 19-game hitting streak snapped just 24 hours earlier... Moose capped his fifth career 4-hit game with a shot to the seats in right off of Ken Giles.

ROSTER MOVES--The Royals made a pair of moves today recalling left-handed pitcher Scott Alexander from his minor league injury rehab assignment with (AAA) Omaha (right hamstring strain) and activating him from the 10-day disabled list and also recalling infielder Ram?n Torres from the Storm Chasers...to make room on the 25-man roster, Kansas City has optioned right-handed pitcher Kevin McCarthy and outfielder Billy Burns back to Omaha...Alexander had made 10 appearances allowing two earned runs in 14.1 innings with KC before sustaining the injury...he worked five times during his rehab stint, most recently a perfect inning yesterday...Torres, 24, makes his first-ever appearance with the big league club after signing as a 16-year old out of the Dominican Republic in 2009...the versatile switch-hitting infielder has hit .327 in 53 games for Omaha this year (69-for-211) with eight doubles, a triple, five home runs, eight stolen bases and 34 RBI...he will wear #46.

WALK-OFF WONDER--Last night's surprise comeback was capped with Mike Moustakas clubbing his second career walk-off home run, the other occurring on September 5, 2013 vs. Seattle...it was the first by a Royal since Kendrys Morales did it in the 13th inning of a win over Atlanta on May 15, 2016...it was the 68th walk-off home run in team history...as for the Moose shot last night, it was his 15th of the year, good for a tie for eighth in the A.L., while his pace for 2017 is at 43, which would shatter Steve Balboni's 1985 club record of 36.

MIDDLE OF ORDER DOMINATES--Manager Ned Yost made a couple of lineup changes prior to the start of this series, one of which was moving Mike Moustakas from the second spot in the order to the sixth...so far, so good on that move, as Moose has gone 6-for-8 with two doubles and a home run, the one that ended last night's game...the middle third of last night batting order, with Eric Hosmer in the four-hole and Sal Perez batting fifth, combined to go 10-for-14 with six runs scored, four doubles, the home run by Moustakas and four RBI...Hosmer was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and Perez added three hits, including a double and the 2-out base hit in the ninth that brought Moustakas to the plate for the game ending blast.

ACE 30

REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a 38-31 during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, "Ace" will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch.

that stretch, behind Kershaw (23), Madison Bumgarner (15), David Price and Chris Sale (14).

NO. 1 vs. NO. 2--The top two pitchers in terms of earned run average will match up tonight as Vargas' 2.08 ERA is topped only by Dallas Keuchel's 1.67 mark...

according to Elias Sports Bureau, this is the first time since September 3, 2005 that pitchers ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in ERA have met this late in the season, when

Houston's Roger Clemens (1.51) faced St. Louis' Chris Carpenter (2.29) at Minute Maid Park, a game which the Cardinals won, 4-2.

THE COMEBACK--Vargas made three starts last September, including his first appearance in the Majors since July 21, 2015...according to Jon Roegele's Tommy

John surgery database at The Hardball Times, Vargas' return from Tommy John surgery (409 days) was the fastest by a Major League starting pitcher since Gavin

Floyd (363 days) in 2014...in 14 starts since his return, Vargas is 7-3 with a 2.10 ERA (19 ER in 81.1 IP) and a .227 opponents' avg. (68-for-300).

VS. HOUSTON--Jason earned his first career victory over Houston on April 7, allowing one run on six hits over 6.0 innings in a 5-1 triumph...in five starts against

the `Stros all-time, he's 1-2 with a 6.84 ERA (20 ER in 26.1 IP) with eight walks and 24 strikeouts...three of his outings came during the 2013 season with the Angels...

he's 23-22 with a 3.42 ERA in his career against AL West foes, including a 6-3 mark and a 2.26 ERA (18 ER in 71.2 IP) vs. the division as a Royal.

HOME AGAIN--As tough as Vargas has been on opposing hitters, he's been even better at `The K', going 4-1 with a 1.59 ERA (7 ER in 39.1 IP) here...his home

ERA ranks fourth in the Majors, while his four victories here are tied for third in the AL...dating back to the start of 2015, Jason has just one loss in 12 starts at Kauffman

Royals Notes - Houston Astros @ Kansas City Royals - Wednesday, June 7, 2017

This & That

THE LAND OF HOZ--Eric Hosmer has collected five hits in the first two games of this series, highlighted by a 3-hit effort last night that featured a pair of doubles... he is riding a 9-game hitting streak in which he's batting .395 (15-for-38) with seven runs, six doubles, a home run, five RBI and a .632 slugging pct....he could very easily be in the midst of an 11-game hitting streak, but after picking up two hits on May 26 in Cleveland, he was limited to one at bat the following afternoon as Bill Welke and Hoz didn't see eye-to-eye on a first inning strikeout and he was tossed...after opening 2017 with a .185 average through April 22, Hosmer has raised his season mark 130 points to .315 entering tonight...in 40 games since the early-season slide, the three-time Rawlings Gold Glover has batted .370 (57-for-154) with a .413 on-base percentage and a .545 slugging percentage...Hoz's three hits last night extended his on-base streak here in Kauffman Stadium to 38 straight, the longest on-base streak at "The K" since Carlos Beltran reached safely in 44 straight (2001-02), preceded by Amos Otis in 1978-79.

PEREZ STILL HOLDING ALL-STAR LEAD--Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez is making his bid for a fifth consecutive trip to the All-Star Game as he continues to lead all A.L. catchers after two ballot announcements with 692,867 votes, nearly 150,000 more votes than second place Wellington Castillo of Baltimore...a threetime starter in the Midsummer Classic, Perez is coming off the 2016 contest when he received the most votes, with 4,965,838, becoming the first Royal to lead the Major League balloting since George Brett in 1981.

TWO TO GO ON EXTENDED STAY--Last night's win evened this homestand at 4-4 with a pair against the Astros remaining...KC lost two of three from Detroit to open the stay, despite holding leads in each contest, then took two of three from last year's A.L. champion Cleveland Indians over the weekend and then has split the first two of this 4-game series...overall, the Kansas City is 16-15 in "The K" this year, coming off of a 2016 season in which KC was 47-34 at home.

HUGE HIT BY WHIT--A night after an 0-for-5 disintegrated Whit Merrifield's MLB best 19-game hitting streak, the second baseman rebounded with a pair of knocks last night, none bigger than the bases clearing 2-out double in the eighth that turned a 7-4 deficit into a tie game...his 19-gamer passed earlier 17-game streaks by Mike Trout and Jean Segura, which were tops in the Majors prior Whit's stretch...Merrifield's streak tied the longest by a Royal since Alex Gordon's 19-game streak in April, 2011 as the most recent streak of such magnitude...Whit, who enters tonight hitting .299 on the year, is still batting .382 (29-for-76) with five doubles, a triple, three homers, 12 RBI, 10 runs and five walks in his last 21 games.

INTERLEAGUE LIES AHEAD--Kansas City will end this homestand tomorrow night and depart for the left coast where nine games await, the first five of which will be against N.L. West competition as Interleague play resumes for the Royals...the first stop will be San Diego for a 3-game weekend series commencing on Friday night, then after a day off on Monday, the Royals will pay their first visit to AT&T Park in San Francisco since the 2014 World Series...the trip will conclude with a 4-game stop in Anaheim as work in the A.L. resumes...KC has played only two Interleague games to this point in 2017, splitting a pair with the Giants in April here at "The K"...the Royals, Tigers and Giants are the only clubs to have played just two Interleague games to this point.

KC'S SECRET WEAPON--Replay specialist Bill Duplissea came up big again on Friday night as the replay challenge of Lorenzo Cain's initial out call at first base was favored Kansas City and broke the scoreless deadlock in the sixth inning...Duper has returned to the top of the standings based on information released last night, as he's hitting at a 79% success rate (11-for-14), while the Twins are next at 78% (7-for-9)...Dupe closed 2016 as the best in baseball at his craft with a 69.2% success rate, making good of 27 of 39 challenges, with the Mets next at 67.7% (21-for-31).

BACK TO ERRORLESS WAYS--The Royals snapped a quick 2-game stretch in which they had committed an error, matching their longest streak of the year, with errorless defensive play last night...Kansas City has been guilty of a Major League low 19 errors on the season, three fewer than runner-up Minnesota.

3-2 START TO JUNE--The Royals have opened the third month of 2017 with a 3-2 mark after winning the first two games against Cleveland before dropping the finale and then splitting the first two of this set with Houston...Kansas City is 9-18 within the Central, going 0-8 in April, then improving to 7-9 in May...Kansas City will not play another A.L. Central foe until traveling Detroit on June 27-29...the Royals are 7-8 against the A.L. West, with this series starting a stretch in which eight of 13 games are being played against that division...this series and a 4-game stop in Anaheim on June 15-18 are sandwiched around KC's next Interleague experience, which will consist of a 3-game stop in San Diego this weekend and 2-game set in San Francisco.

AT THE HELM--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is in his seventh full season with the club, taking the reins on May 13, 2010...he enters tonight eight games under .500 with the Royals at 574-582 during the regular season, the win total shattering Whitey Herzog's previous team mark of 410 wins (197579)...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is seventh among active managers is games (2,115) and wins (1,031)...his postseason record of 22-9 represents a .710 winning pct., which is tops among all managers who have been at the helm for at least 20 postseason games...he's also 2-0 in managing the American League All-Star team, winning in both Cincinnati (`15) and San Diego (`16), the last two times the home field advantage was determined by the All-Star outcome...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox's big league staff (1991-2002).
