2566670596900WOMEN OF EGYPT - WRITING CONTEST FOR CHILDREN IN 2019“Women of Egypt” announces the launch of its First Writing Contest for Egyptian children all over the world between the ages of 3 and 16. The contest is made possible with the generous support of Diwan Bookstore and Al Dar Al Masriah Al Lubnaniah Publishing House; Art Partner One Shot for Photography and Advertising; and Media Partners Friends of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina at Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia, Arabic Literature in English Blog “ArabLit”, and Cairo Mockingbird Platform for Arab Art and Literature. The contest starts on 15 January 2019 and closes on 15 February 2019 (12 pm Cairo Time). Its goal is to discover and celebrate Egyptian children’s creative writing, in English or Arabic, and to get them excited about reading and writing by encouraging them– no matter what their background, education or lack thereof. WOE is looking forward to receiving your children’s super entries at every age-group. We want to hear what children want to write about, the stories they want to tell us. Entry Rules: There are NO fees to enter the contest.The contest is open to Egyptian children all over the world between the ages of 3 and 16Only single author stories qualify (no co-authored stories). Entrants will write an original story in English or Arabic on any subject or theme (fact or fiction). All entries must be submitted by an adult capable of giving permission on behalf of the child – either a parent or a guardian – and send the story using the Entry Form as a Word document to the following email: womenofegyptmagazine@. Parents/guardians should include a scanned copy or a photo of their Egyptian national ID or passport, for proof of contestant’s citizenship. Children born to Egyptian parents anywhere in the world qualify to participate. Submissions are sent by email under the subject “Children Writing Contest Submissions”. Word Count Range:The age group 3 – 5 years must have minimum 5 words and maximum 100 words. The age group 6 – 11 years must have minimum 100 words and maximum 600 words.The age group 12 – 16 years must have minimum 600 words and maximum 1500 words. Text must be typed and sent as a word document by email. Children who cannot write yet may dictate their story to be typed and sent using the Entry Form as a Word document by email. Children can include drawings and photos in a separate JPEG or PDF file. Drawings and photos are optional and will not be evaluated as part of the contest. Word count includes “a,” “an,” & “the”. For age category 3 – 5 years, you need to write an original story that is no more than 100 Words long or under, but not less than 5 Words. For age category 6 – 11 years, you need to write an original story that is no more than 600 Words long or under, but not less than 100 Words.For age category 12 – 16 years, you need to write an original story that is no more than 1500 Words long or under, but not less than 600 Words.4- Is there a minimum word limit?There is no lower limit, however the more you write, the more content our judges have to mark!Once you've written your story, you can enter it into the contest using the Entry Form (attached). 5- What if I live abroad and don’t have the citizenship, but my parents are Egyptians? The exact prizes will be announced when the contest launches in January 2019. 8- When will you announce the Top stories?In each contest, the top 3 stories in each age category will be announced in June 2019 (Total of 18 winning stories in both contests). 9- Can I submit more than one story?You can only submit one story - and it has to be all your own work.If you enter more than one story, then we'll only consider the first submission as part of the contest. 10- Can I write a story in French or Spanish?All stories must be submitted in English or Arabic. 11- Can Egyptian children living abroad participate in the contest?Yes, they can! 12- Can a story be submitted without an adult’s approval?No. We need an adult to approve the entry and agree to these Entry Rules on behalf of the entrant, by way of a filling the Entry Form. The adult could be the child’s parent or guardian. The adult must provide their own contact details (not the child’s) and the region in which the child resides. 13- Why do you need personal information?The personal data provided will be used for the purposes of administering the contest and in accordance with the Contest Privacy Policy. WOE will use the contact details provided by the adult to send general updates as to the progress of the contest by email.14- Does the story have to be original?Your story must be all your own original work — you must not copy someone else's story. Any entry deemed to be a copy by our judges will be disqualified.Your story can be fiction or fact (an account of real events — either historical or current).However, your stories can:Feature well known public figures from today or from history Take place in historical eras Use real-life experiences as a creative springboard. 15- Can I write about a character from a book I've read?Entrants can use fictional or real-life characters, as a creative springboard but we're looking for made-up stories, which will be marked for characterisation, as well as originality, plot, language and enjoyment. 16- Can visually impaired students enter?Yes, they can! Should your child win, we will make sure that the prize is appropriate. 17- Is the title included in the word limit?The title will not be included in your word count. 18- Can an adult correct the spelling of a child's story?You may correct spelling where the meaning of the word might otherwise be misconstrued. However, we ask that none of the words used are changed. Grammar also has to stay the same.Stories are marked on their creative use of language, not on correct spelling. 19- May I type for my child? You may type for your child, as long as none of the words used are changed. To this end, we would like to think that children with special educational needs could still participate in the contest. 23- Does my story have to be written in prose?Any submission will be judged on the same marking criteria. Your story can take any form - be that a poem, play, dialogue etc. - but it will be marked on plot, enjoyment, originality, language and characterisation like any other story, and not receive any special consideration because of its structure. 24- I made a mistake on my story submission form - what can I do?You will not be able to change any details or edit your story after it has been successfully submitted to us. 25- I didn't save a copy of my story - can you please send me a copy?We’re sorry but we can't return stories. With the huge number of entries to this contest, it would not be possible to cope with the extra administration required. 26- I've sent in my story - when will I hear back?Once your story has been submitted you will receive an automated email receipt.The parents or guardians of the shortlisted entrants will be notified by emails.
