| |Kristin Hales, Tech's Thornton Distinguished Chair and an associate professor in the Department of Animal and Food |

| |Sciences, received the award from the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture for her project, |

| |"Investigating the Emergence and Ecology of Antimicrobial Resistance in High-Risk Beef Cattle.” The project will seek |

| |to identify how antimicrobial resistance develops and is spread in beef cattle, and develop mitigation strategies to |

| |reduce antimicrobial resistance incidents throughout the beef industry. “To achieve our goals, we have assembled a |

| |highly qualified, interdisciplinary team with expertise in food safety, gastrointestinal microbial ecology, |

| |microbiome, ruminant nutrition, animal health, disease, epidemiology and outreach," she said. >> more |

| |NRM’s Stevens set to study habitat functionality of Texas Kangaroo Rat |

| |Richard Stevens, an associate professor with the Department of Natural Resources Management, has received a $300,000 |

| |grant from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. His project, titled "Spatial Ecology of the Texas Kangaroo Rat," |

| |will attempt to evaluate Texas Kangaroo Rat movements, dispersal and metapopulation dynamics in North Texas grasslands|

| |with the hope of enhancing its survival. |

| |AFS microbial, food safety expert joins new School of Veterinary Medicine |

| |Alexandra Calle, an assistant professor with the Department of Animal and Food Sciences for the past three years, has |

| |joined Tech’s new School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo as an assistant professor of microbiology. She said it’s |

| |an opportunity to show that food safety, public health and animal health are closely related, based on the premise |

| |that animal health is important to human health. |

| |Journal of Agricultural Education honors Rayfield for outstanding article |

| |John Rayfield, an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications, was recognized |

| |last month for his academic scholarship when his research study was selected as the 'Outstanding Journal Article for |

| |2019' by the American Association for Agricultural Education's Journal of Agricultural Education. "It has been a |

| |career goal to have my research recognized at this level,” he said. |

| |CASNR experts team with Zoonotic & Infectious Diseases Research Center |

| |More than 30 years of activity in biology, agricultural sciences, engineering and more are behind the launch of Texas |

| |Tech’s new Zoonotic and Infectious Diseases Research Center. As part of that effort, Vinicius Machado with the |

| |Department of Veterinary Sciences and Kristin Hales with the Department of Animal and Food Sciences are examining |

| |cattle health with a special focus on antimicrobial resistance. |

| |Achilles Vieira-Neto joins CASNR's Department of Veterinary Sciences |

| |Achilles Vieira-Neto, an expert in nutrition and endocrinology of dairy cows, has been named a research assistant |

| |professor in the Department of Veterinary Sciences, effective June 1. The Brazil native indicated that his research |

| |program broadly focuses on understanding the nutritional physiology underlying the absorption and regulation of |

| |nutrients and their metabolism during the transition period in dairy cattle. |

| |LA’s Monsur part of int'l team studying children’s adaptation during COVID-19 |

| |Children's experiences of life during the COVID-19 pandemic are to be investigated by researchers. A research team |

| |that includes Muntazar Monsur, an assistant professor with the Department of Landscape Architecture, aims to find out |

| |what kinds of activities children and young people have been doing during the pandemic and how they have adjusted to |

| |the huge changes brought on by the lockdown. |

| |PSS’s Guo using drones to detect crop conditions, including temperature |

| |Wenxuan Guo, an assistant professor of crop ecophysiology and precision agriculture with Tech's Department of Plant |

| |and Soil Science, is using drones that measure about six feet wide and can carry up to 20 pounds of payload such as |

| |thermal, hyperspectral and multispectral sensors, which can measure or determine temperature, plant count, height, |

| |leaf area, canopy cover and plant maturity. |

| |Texas Tech’s virtual commencement ceremony features CASNR students |

| |Despite not hosting graduating students and their families on campus for graduation due to COVID-19, CASNR still |

| |celebrated its May 2020 graduates. This semester, that celebration took place in the form of a virtual commencement |

| |ceremony that included a graduate slide of the student that featured their name, academic degree and honors. The |

| |program also featured comments by football standout Patrick Mahomes. |

| |PSS students shine in annual graduate research poster competition |

| |Three top-flight Department of Plant and Soil Science students brought home awards earlier this semester from the |

| |Texas Tech Graduate School's 19th Annual Graduate Student Poster Competition. Doctoral student Kathryn Radicke won |

| |first place in the biological life sciences category. In addition, Prakash Parajuli and Shaida Rumi both received |

| |third place honors in the biological life sciences category. |

| |Texas Tech announces CASNR’s 2020 incoming first-year Terry Scholars |

| |Officials at Texas Tech's Financial Aid and Scholarship Office have announced the names of three CASNR students |

| |receiving the latest prestigious Terry Scholarships. The first year students are Sydney Blackmon, a plant and soil |

| |science major from Van, Texas; Madison Klam, an agricultural communications major from Schulenburg, Texas; and Kaitlyn|

| |Perkins, a plant and soil science major from Brenham, Texas. |
