A Critical Season of the Year

Where there is no vision, the people

perish.

- Proverbs 29:18

Another powerful Lent and Easter season has come and gone, and now we enter into the late spring and summer months of the church. After stretching ourselves with additional worship services, special mission projects and retreats, it's tempting to let the foot off the gas. That would be a big mistake though! After all, what is Easter for? Easter is for new creation, new life, new eyes, new heart and a new congregation! We are in the "Now What?" season of the church year. What are we going to do with this new resurrected life we've been

given?

these planning teams we are forming. We want to plan during this season so that we are ready to execute these dreams come fall. If you can't serve on one of our planning teams, you can pray for your church!

Let's give together. Generosity is a sign of faith. We grew by 6% last year over 2017. Yay! One great way to help your church is to keep current on your pledges and intended giving this second quarter of the year. When we are growing in our financial commitment to the church, we go from making money decisions in the church to making mission decisions for the Kingdom. This is a great time of the year to strengthen your discipleship and make a witness to Easter through a generous financial gift to Parkway Heights. No gift is too insignificant!

Let's worship together. We begin May with one worship service at 10 a.m. to honor our graduating seniors. Please come pack the house May 5 at 10 a.m. to send our graduates off with prayer and thanksgiving. During the rest of May we'll be devoted to our sermon series: Flow: Catching the Current of Your Baptism. This four-week series will concentrate on what it means to fully live into our baptism!

This may not seem like an important time of the year, but don't be fooled. It would be nice to not do any planning for the second half of the year and hope it all comes together. I'd rather stop wishing and start planning. So who's with me?

Peace, Bruce

I'm glad you asked! I have a thought

or two:

Let's dream and pray together. Our Church Council had a very productive meeting here recently about a new vision for caring for those who are over 70, helping younger baby boomers to find their calling to serve, re-imagining our Sunday morning schedule and reconnecting our Open Door ministry with all members of Parkway Heights. We celebrated the newly painted stairwell (thank you, Trustees!), as well as our second season of a co-parenting class for parents who live separately. We also gave thanks for four more bands and small groups that have been created in the past couple months. Now is the time to gather in teams to put our dreams into motion! If any of these things interest you, I'd love for you to be on

ONE Service for Senior Sunday - May 5

To honor our high school seniors, our annual Team5:1 High School Senior Sunday will be Sunday, May 5! We will worship together in ONE combined service at 10 a.m. in Founders Hall. After the service, we will enjoy a churchwide BBQ picnic.

Please bring your own table, chairs or blanket. We will provide seating for our senior adults and our high school seniors and their families.

Please remember to bring notes or cards to our seniors on May 5. They will have baskets to receive the notes. Our seniors are: Nellie Arrington, Ben Buffington, A.C. May Communion Offering for Sunday Fund

On Sunday, May 5, our communion offering will support the Sunday Fund. The Sunday Fund is the most critical support of the Methodist Senior Services ministry. Methodist Senior Services provides comfortable, affordable housing and other services to meet the physical, social and spiritual needs of older adults.

The Sunday Fund is a benevolence fund designed to assist elders living on any of the Methodist Senior Services campuses across the state. Without Sunday Fund assistance, there are men and women who could no longer maintain their residency. One hundred percent of the money donated to the Sunday Fund is used to support elders who have outlived their resources and must ask for help.

Parkway Heights has several church members who call Wesley Manor Retirement Community, a Methodist Senior Services campus here in Hattiesburg, home. We encourage you to please give generously, so we can turn worry into joy and turn concern into peace for the elders God calls us all to serve.

Mail Room

Dear Parkway Heights UMC,

We had an amazing night at our annual fundraiser, Friends of Wesley! We celebrate the hard work of each pastor, board member and church that made this event a success. We raised a total of $11,816. This would not be possible without each of you. We are thankful and humbled by the love and support you have shared with our ministry. We celebrate 80 years of serving students at USM, and we celebrate you for your commitment to keeping it going!

Thank you, Rev. Eric Davis

Truly an example of open hearts and open doors, I am blown away by the generosity and kindness of PHUMC. Thank you so very much for allowing me to teach lessons in the Resource Room last fall and for hosting my lecture recital this spring. What a blessing this church has been to my life and our entire USM music family! May God bless you tenfold!

Yours, Meredith Johnson
