~ About the DON COSSACK CHOIR
The history and uchievenrelics of this world-famous Choir need little introduction to American' audiences. Formed more than thirty years ago after the defeat of the White Russian Army, in which the Cossacks served, the Choir gave its first public concert in 1923. Since then, under their indefatigable leader, Serge Jaroff, the Don Cossacks have been hailed in every part of the world: in Europe, in Africa, in India, in Australia and New Zeeland, and, of course, in the United States, where they have been an established institution for a quarter of a century. Since 1939 the members of the Choir have been citizens of the United States.

SIDE ONE
1. At A RUSSIAN FAIR This is an attempt to recreate through the
most popular Russian folk songs--peasants', cossacks', beggars', soldiers'--the characteristic atmosphere of a lively, boisterous Russian Fair.
At the beginning we hear barkers luring
We's happy and young!
(Refrain ) Song of our Belov'd one, Strengthening our hearts Like good, sparkling wine! We are certainly proud Of our uriforms and beautiful horses!
(Refrain ) Hello, pretty maidens! Hello, lovely ladies! Our hearts-- you should know-- Are bewitched by your charm!
(Refrain )
Christ the Child, Christ our Savior was born. The King of Light, With His boundless, unlimited love, He will save all the people! Glory, glory to Him!
5. AFTER THE BATTLE
Along the beaten country road After the bloody invasion, Don Cossacks are returning home With proud souls and gay songs. And all are happy, And all are proud.
As this campfire burns out slowly So our love must have an end. It is late, when midnight strikes We must say our last farewell. At the break of day tomorrow We, the gypsies, must depart. Oh, my dear! Remeriber always Our last meeting on the Bridge.
3. A NEW YEAR'S TALE (Ukrainian "T shedrivka'') The hawk flew down to the window of
the young charming girl. It was New Year's

:
Make haste!
Come closer!
And then a drinking song:
I was at a carefree, gay feast,
Where all were drinking.
'T was not honey or tea,
'Twas vodochka! (Vodka)
This song is really about a charming
tender girl, delicate as a single beautiful
birch tree in the open field.
A young man hesitates before asking the
hand of the girl. He sings:
:
In the field the birch tree was growing,
Lonely and beautiful birch tree!
Then the chorus encourages him.
Like a lonely orphan child, His head bowed in mournful sorrow.
What is the matter, Don Cossack? Why do you behave like a woman? Lift up your head, Come on! Cheer up! Do not be soft! And be a brave man!
been crying.
But why? Her father was angry and her
mother distressed. What's the reason?
.
Oh! The holiday skirt was too short and
the shoes were not pretty!
4. CHRISTMAS NIGHT (Ukrainian Cavol)
And I used to drink
Ta-ta-ta-ra, Ta-ra-ta-ra --
Happy evening, dear friends,
From the largest glass.
`When the snow fell on the field,

cries: Til show you The bloody battles of war, Where we beat the fearsome Turks. And the glory was ours!
A little further on there is a slow Valse of
the Hurdy-Gurdy, and an exotic bird picking
up multicolored tickets foretelling the future, attracting the credulous.
Why I feel so desperately lonely. If I come to your shadow, Will I find repose or trouble?
4, GLORY TO HIM (Ukrainian Carol) Tonight in the distant heaven Shines the beautiful Star. *T was the time

(It's impossible to explain.)
Chorus: Look! Lilacs are in bloom, The skies are blue: In the spring --ev'ry lover Will find his heart's desire.
Cease to worry, soar like eagles, We are marching to the camp! Over there we'll get our training, We will work, and we will rest. In that city of the canvas,
Stronghold, fortress and our home, Ev'ry morning, each day and evening We'll learn to defend our land!
To the heart of a young, sad-eyed fellow,
the Valse brings a tender emotion:
IF YOU'VE ENJOYED THIS RECORDING... YOU'RE SURE TO LIKE THESE OTHER GREAT LONG PLAY ALBUMS:

My heart is full of fear: You love me, or, alas,

In the meantime the crowd is getting
much gayer. Somebody starts to sing a mock-
ing song called "Barynia" (a funny lady).
The young people begin to dance and now
we really can detect three or four different melodies, which come together in one great
musical climax.
