List of activities of the Atlantic Council of Albania during the year 2007

Brief historic background:

The Atlantic Council of Albania was founded on June 4, 1994 by a group of intellectuals from various fields of activity of the Albanian society of the very hectic period of time of the beginning of the post-communist democratic changes.

The first President of the Atlantic Council of Albania (by the former name Albanian Atlantic Association) was Mr. Alfred Moisiu, a former Minister of Defense of Albania and, now a former President of the Republic of Albania.

From July 2002, the President of the Atlantic Council of Albania is Dr. Arian Starova, a Member of Parliament since 2001 and a former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania.

The Executive Secretary of the Atlantic Council of Albania is Mr. Kristaq Birbo, a former Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the Republic of Albania.

In Albania:

1. April 23, meeting with a delegation of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Participants, Dr. Arian Starova, Prof. Dr. Agim Binaj, Ms. Merlinda Hoço, Ms. Arianita Hasa,

2. May 15, meeting with a delegation from the Swiss Ministry of Defense, headed by Mr. Marc Allen-Stritt.

3. June 10, long discussions on NATO and the Adriatic Charter on several TV channels (Albanian State TV, TVA and TV Koha) by Dr. A. Starova, on the occasion of the visit of President George Bush in Tirana.

4. Many meetings (on behalf of the Atlantic Council of Albania) with Ambassadors and other representatives of the Diplomatic Corps in Tirana for discussing on various topics linked with the regional security and NATO’s role, by Dr. Starova.

5. Numerous TV and Newspaper interviews on NATO and security issues.

6. October 11, Public Lecture held by Amb. Geert Ahrens in the audience of the Atlantic Council of Albania and it’s youth branch (YACA).

7. October 11, Press Conference on the Resolution of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly on “Supporting the three Adriatic Aspirants towards membership in NATO”. By Dr. Arian Starova.

8. October 19-20, 12-th International Annual Conference of the Atlantic Council of Albania entitled “In view of a Sustained Security and Development in the Western Balkans”.

9. October, Publication of the book with the materials of the 11-th Annual International Conference of the Atlantic Council of Albania.

10. November, Establishment of the Website of the Atlantic Council of Albania.

Outside Albania:

March 28-30, Szeged, Hungary, “14-Forum of History teachers”. Conference of the Szeged Center for Security Policy. Participants: Dr. A.Starova, Speaker, Mr. Andi Pinari.

1. April 27, Prishtina, Kosova, 1-st Conference of the Atlantic Kosovar Association. Participants: Dr. A.Starova, speaker, Mr. P. Karabina, Vice minister of Defense.

May 7-9, Brussels, Council Meeting of the ATA. Participants: Dr. A.Starova.

2. Maj 9-11, Sofia, Konferenca e Institutit për Demokraci e Qendrueshmëri në Europën Juglindore. Participant: Dr. A. Starova.

3. May 17-20, Ponte de Lima, Portugal, Second meeting of the European Security Forum (ESF). Participant: Dr. A.Starova.

4. June 10-15, Szeged, Hungary. “International Seminar on Local Power”. Participants: Ms. Merlinda Hoço, President of the YACA and Ms. Arianita Hasa, Project Coordinator of the ACA.

5. June 17-19, Moscow, Russian Federation. Youth Conference organized by the youth Forum of the Euro-Atlantic Association of Russia. Participants: Ms. Merlinda Hoço, President of the YACA and Ms. Arianita Hasa, Project Coordinator of the ACA.

6. June 27-30, Struga, Macedonia. Junior Security Forum. Participants: Ms. Nada Kallçiu, Vice President of the YACA, Ms. Arianita Hasa, Project Cordinator of ACA.

7. June 28-29, Ohrid, Macedonia. EAPC Security Forum. Participant in the delegation headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania, Mr. Lulzim Basha: Dr, Arian Starova.

8. June 28-July 1, Bucharest, Romania, International Conference “EU and NATO acting together in SEE - The Role of the NGOs networks”. Participant: Ms. Ana Shkëmbi, member of YACA.

9. September 3-9, Sipan, Croatia, “Summer Seminar on NATO”. Speaker: Mr. Petrit Karabina, Vice Minister of Defense, member of the Steering Committee of the Atlantic Council of Albania. Participants: Dr. Arian Starova, Mr. Bledi Binaj.

10. September 27-29, Budva, Montenegro. Participant: Mr. Kristaq Birbo, Executive Secretary of the Atlantic Council of Albania.

11. October 6-7, Atlantic Activities in Budapest: Hungarian New Atlantic Initiative and NATO PDD Youth Brain Storming on "Euro-Atlantic Integration of the West Balkans" held in the Hungarian Parliament (6 October) and the “2nd NATO Partnership Running Festival”, organized in the centre of Budapest (7 October). 12. October 22-24, Nikshiq, Montenegro, Conference on “The role of Civil Sector in Preventing Terrorism in Western Balkans”. Participant and speaker: Dr. Arian Starova.

13. October 24, Nikshiq Montenegro, Signature of the Initiative “Citizens against Terrorism” (CAT) as one of the 35 NGO who already joined the initiative.

14. October 30-November 2, Ottawa, Canada, “53-rd General Assembly of the ATA”. Participants: Dr. Arian Starova, Mr. Kristaq Birbo, Ms. Nada Kallçiu, Ms. Arianita Hasa, Mr. Kudret Shalsi, Ms. Liljana Shalsi.

15. November 26-27, Bratislava, Slovakia, Conference “Globsec Express-sending message to the Balkans”. Participants: Mr. Artur Hasanbelliu, Mr. Gjergj Erebara.

Planned Activities of the Atlantic Council of Albania during the year 2008

1. Establishment of the Group of the Young lecturers to deliver Public Lectures in Universities and other audience all over Albania, (by December 2007).

2. Compilation of e Project of a Public Opinion Poll on the perceptions of Albanians with regard to NATO and EU, (by March 2008).

3. Compilation of a Project on the Trans-Atlantic relations between USA and EU jointly with other counterpart organizations from the region.

4. Continuous Round Tables of the Atlantic Council of Albania and various security experts with journalists (4-6 during the year).

5. Publication of the book with the material of the 11-th Annual International Conference of the Atlantic Council of Albania (by May 2008).

6. Continued cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Albania in view of a better Euro-Atlantic Education in the Albanian middle schools.

7. Encouragement of the government structures to designate a “NATO Day” in Albania (by December 2007).

8. Periodic Press Conferences as an important activity for informing the Public on NATO and Security issues (every two months, or more).

9. 13-th Annual International Conference of the Atlantic Council of Albania (End of May 2008).

10. Participation in the international activities of the counterpart Atlantic organizations or other activities outside the country.

11. Festive activities pre and after Bucharest NATO Summit (spring 2008).
