Anatoly Georgevich Vichnevsky is Director of the Demographics Institute at the State University--Higher School of Economics (SU--HSE) in Moscow and the Editor-in-Chief of the weekly online publication "Demoscope Weekly," which has been appearing since 2001.

Having graduated from Kharkov University in 1958, he began working in the area of demography in the 1960s. In the 1990s, he taught at several French universities as a visiting professor, including at Paris's Institute of Political Studies from 1995-2000. He is the author of more than 340 scientific publications. His most noteworthy books are Demographicheskaya Revolutsia [A Demographic Revolution], 1976; Vosproizvodstvo naseleniya i obshchestvo [The Reproduction of Population and Society], 1982; Serp I rubl [Sickle and Ruble], 1998; Vichnevski (ed.), Demographicheskaya modernizatsiya Rossii: 1900-2000 [The Demographic Modernization of Russia: 1900-2000], 2006.

Vichnevski is the editor responsible for the annual demographic reports published since 1993, "Naseleniye Rossii" [Russia's Population]. He recently co-authored "Rossiya pered litsom demographicheskikh vyzovov" [Russia in the Face of Demographic Challenges], a report by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on the development of human potential in the Russian Federation up to 2008.
