TEKS—120.42b—Students develop a foundation in the economical, financial, technological, international, social, and ethical aspects of business to become competent consumers, employees, and entrepreneurs.
TEKS—120.42c(7A, D)—The student practices productivity skills as they apply to accounting. The student is expected to follow oral and written instructions and explain the concepts of integrity and confidentiality as related to the accounting profession.
SCANS SKILLS—F1 Reading, F5 Listening, F12 Reasoning, F17 Integrity/Honesty, C6 Organizes Information, C7 Interprets Information, C16 Monitors Systems.
Objective: Prepare students to play the Stock Market Game by providing information about the stock market and by providing opportunities to monitor stock market changes.
Focus: Ask students “If you had a $100,000 to invest in the stock market, how would you invest your money? Would you first do some research or would you just jump right in?”
Instruction: Students will select a stock of their choice to follow during the first semester. The student will report weekly on the Friday stock market closing information listed in the Saturday business section of The Houston Chronicle. Pertinent stock market terminology will be introduced.
Guided Practice: Using the business section of The Houston Chronicle, discuss current articles describing activities/events which have current effects on the stock market. Demonstrate how to read the stock market listings in the newspaper.
Independent Practice: Each Monday the student will record for the stock chosen the Friday stock market closing information listed in the Saturday business section of The Houston Chronicle and record it on the form provided (see below). The student will also record the changes in the major U.S. stock indexes and the Houston company with the greatest positive change during the previous week.
Assessment: The teacher will randomly check the accuracy of the recordings.
Follow-Up: Using the information collected, the teams will select the stocks they will initially invest in when playing the Stock Market Game during the spring semester.
