Part Three: Dialectic Journals
You must also complete 10 dialectic journal entries for the book, however, this time, you do not need to focus on any particular standards. Instead, you may simply choose passages that are interesting to you and respond to them freely.
Pick an excerpt from the text that stands out to you for whatever reason. It may be interesting, funny, sad, revealing, exciting, descriptive, or well-written. It can be a piece of narration or dialogue.
Keep in mind that we will eventually be writing a literary response essay based on a character, theme or other aspect of the book. Even though you won’t be able to choose a topic until you are well into or even finished reading the book, if you do have an idea for a topic as you are reading, it would be wise to choose at least some quotes from the text that you think you may be able to use as supporting details in your essay. The example below could be a supporting detail for an essay exploring Johnny’s character and what motivates him.
From the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
|TEXT |RESPONSE |
|Johnny: “I think I like it better when the old man’s hittin’ |This passage reveals a great deal about Johnny’s character. First of all, he is obviously |
|me…At least then I know he knows who I am. I walk in the house, |neglected by his parents. They don’t seem to care or even notice whether he is there or not. |
|and nobody says anything. I walk out, and nobody says anything. |Furthermore, when he does get any attention at all, it is in the form of physical abuse. This |
|I stay away all night, and nobody notices” (51) |passage shows just how desperate he is for the love and affection of his parents. It is so sad |
| |that he would rather be beaten than ignored altogether. This lack of concern is likely what |
| |drove him to join the Greasers. His fellow gang members are not just his friends, but his family|
| |as well. |
