The University of Texas at El Paso, College of Health Sciences invites nominations and applications for the position of the Assistant or Associate Professor of Social Work from talented and experienced national leaders who will cultivate excellence in research, teaching, and service.

Qualifications: (1) Earned doctoral degree in social work or a closely related field, (2) strong record of academic scholarship as demonstrated by research publications and ability to secure extramural research funding, and (3) evidence of successful teaching. Preference will be given to candidates who have a strong interest in Hispanic/border health issues.

The Department. The Social Work Program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Social Work has a history of excellence in interdisciplinary research, teaching, and community practice. The department offers a Bachelor of Social Work. A Master of Social Work degree is in development. Faculty also participate in the PhD Program in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences administered by the College of Health Sciences. The program currently has approximately 125 undergraduate majors and five full-time faculty. The program prepares students for generalist practice in a border region.

The College. The College of Health Sciences provides teaching, research and services related to the applied health sciences (). It has five departments (Health Promotion, Clinical Laboratory Science, Kinesiology, Social Work, Rehabilitation Sciences) and two cooperative programs (Pharmacy, Public Health). Strong collaborative ties also exist with the School of Nursing which is housed within the same building. The College is staffed by over 44 full-time faculty members and serves more than 1,300 students. It is nationally recognized for its innovative research in Hispanic health and health disparities. Its strong research program has generated more than $26 million in funding in the past three years.

The University. The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a Doctoral/Research-Intensive urban university offering bachelors, masters and doctoral degree programs to 20,000 students. The City of El Paso, home to UTEP, is part of the world’s largest bi-national metropolitan area located less than one mile from downtown El Paso and just across the Rio Grande from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. A member of the University of Texas System (utsystem.edu), UTEP serves the Paso del Norte border region which includes far west Texas, SE New Mexico, and northern Mexico. The university’s student population closely mirrors the demographics of the region from which it draws more than 90 percent of its students. More than 70 percent are Mexican-American and another 9 percent are Mexican nationals who commute across the international border from Ciudad Juarez.

Teaching excellence and scholarship will be commensurate with appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
