Weighted GPA and Interpreting Class Rank

Weighted GPA is calculated by assigning an additional 0.5 point to every honors level course and an additional 1.0 point to every AP level course. Class rank is figured by multiplying the value of the earned grade in a course (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) by the course level multiplier (AP=5, H=4, CP2=3, CP1=2, Basic (Special Education) =1) multiplied by the number of credits for the course, divided by the total sum of credits.

Weighted G.P.A. is based on 4.0 MA State College/University admissions standard.

Academic Levels

Barnstable High School has high standards and expectations for all students at all levels. Course level placement for students is determined based on the individual needs of each student taking into consideration: teacher recommendations, grades, test scores, student interest, parent input, and the school counselor’s professional guidance based on all factors. The academic levels available at Barnstable High School are listed below.

Advanced Placement (AP) – Intended for highly motivated students who wish to take challenging college-level courses while in high school. Students are expected to take the AP exam at the completion of the course.

Honors (H) – Designed for highly motivated college-bound students who have strong academic skills. These courses are fast-paced and rigorous and require consistent effort and the ability to work independently. Most courses at BHS have an honors option.

College Preparatory (CP) – Intended for college-bound students and for those students who wish to keep their post-secondary options open. Students in CP courses will develop a strong foundation of content and skills based on the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. (To better support all students within the CP designation, some classes are designed to meet individual learning styles through smaller class sizes and more individualized teaching/learning strategies. These classes have the specific designation of CP1).

Standard/Basic – Students are enrolled in standard level courses based on their academic needs according to their Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Note: All first level language classes are only offered at the CP level.

Community

The Town of Barnstable, settled in 1639, is centrally located on Cape Cod with a population of 50,000 and over 145,000 in the summer. Seven main villages make up the town – Cotuit, Marstons Mills, Barnstable, West Barnstable, Osterville, Centerville, and Hyannis. Hyannis is the business, transportation and cultural center of our community. The ethnic and socio-economic diversity continues to grow, moving over the years from a more rural community to a more urban community.
