SUMMARY INFORMATION

Post: LOCUM consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in MUSCULOSKELETAL TUMOUR surgery

Base: glasgow royal Infirmary

We are seeking to recruit a Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in musculo skeletal tumour surgery to start from April 2014. The post holder will be expected to support the established musculo skeletal service, which presently has two surgeons based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Additionally, it is likely to be necessary to undertake lower limb surgery, especially arthroplasty, as required to respond to waiting list pressures.

With its central location, Glasgow Royal Infirmary attracts a significant volume of complex tertiary referrals from around the region. Glasgow is also home to the world famous Beatson Oncology Centre. There are currently 2 substantive consultant surgeons (including this post) responsible for delivering the sarcoma service in addition to a team of Nurses.

The orthopaedic unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary prides itself on its research output with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals each year, as well as many podium presentations and posters at national and international meetings. There is a full time research manager who facilitates research and audit in the department. Excellent facilities also exist for basic science research in collaboration with the Anatomy Department at Glasgow University and the Bioengineering Departments at Glasgow Caledonian and Strathclyde Universities.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the general trauma on-call rota.

It should also be noted that whilst this post is advertised for and will commence at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Greater Glasgow & Clyde is undergoing significant and exciting change with the completion of a new build hospital at the Southern General Site. The move should start to take place in May 2015. There will be a review of all services prior to the opening of the new hospital that may affect all sites and staff within GG&C which could mean working from different site/sites.

HOSPITAL AND CLINICS WHERE SERVICES ARE TO BE PROVIDED

Glasgow Royal Infirmary is a University teaching hospital located in the east of Glasgow. The Directorate of Orthopaedics (East) is based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The population served is approximately 340,000.

There are currently 13 Substantive Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons in the Unit where the full range of trauma and elective orthopaedic sub-specialties is covered.

The orthopaedic wards at Glasgow Royal Infirmary are located in Queen Elizabeth Building in close proximity to the theatres and ITU. Inpatient facilities for both trauma and elective work are based here.

There are three laminar flow theatres for Elective Orthopaedic work. The trauma theatre at Glasgow Royal Infirmary is also located in the main theatre suite and is available for the management of Orthopaedic and soft tissue trauma seven days a week. Day surgery sessions for Orthopaedics are available at the newly built Ambulatory Care Hospital (ACH) on the Stobhill site where 23 hour stay facilities are also provided..

Elective Orthopaedic and Fracture clinics are based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary with a dedicated X-ray facility and medical records department. The processing of patients through the Outpatient department is greatly facilitated by extended role Specialist Orthopaedic Physiotherapists and Podiatrists who initially assess a high proportion of referrals from Primary care. A total of 38 sessions per week of Specialist Physiotherapist time is allocated to this task.

The highly successful fracture clinic redesign has resulted in a significant reduction in unnecessary attendances for simple fractures. Guidelines and protocols are agreed with the Emergency Department for many of the fractures and patients are only seen after an initial triage of x-rays by consultants in a virtual clinic.

A number of post-operative follow-up clinics are run by nurses, physiotherapists and podiatrists. Currently all primary and revision arthroplasty, soft tissue knee and arthroscopy patients are followed a dedicated Outcome Assessment Service with uniform data collected onto a database.

Glasgow Royal Infirmary is a major teaching hospital and has all major specialties on site with the exception of Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic surgery.

There is an excellent Intensive Care Unit run by the Anaesthetic Department at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

The Centre for Rheumatic Diseases is a professorial unit based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and enjoys a close relationship with the Orthopaedic Department. The regional oncology service for the West of Scotland at the new Beatson Centre is located on the Gartnavel site. As a result, the department has the largest workload dealing with bony metastastic disease of any orthopaedic unit in the country. There are close ties also with the Imaging Department with ready access to both CT and MRI scanning, including a dedicated extremity scanner.

There are close ties with the University of Strathclyde Department of Bio-Engineering and the National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics.

The Consultant members of the department are involved in Undergraduate teaching for the University of Glasgow. The Unit is also recognised for Basic Surgical Training and for Higher Surgical Training in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Currently there are 9 ST 3 and above trainees and 6 at the more junior level. There is a postgraduate teaching programme for higher surgical trainees organised on a West of Scotland basis. Education is strongly supported within the unit with regular multi-disciplinary trauma meetings, educational meetings and a monthly audit meeting.

Whilst this post is advertised for and will commence at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Greater Glasgow & Clyde is undergoing significant and exciting change with the completion of a new build hospital at the Southern General Site. The job plan will be reviewed after 3 months to facilitate working as an independent practitioner.

A split of 9:1 between direct clinical care PAs and supporting professional activities is now the advertised standard for all new consultant/locum consultant job plans in Scotland.   The one SPA minimum will reflect activity such as appraisal, personal audit and professional development occurring outside study leave time.   Once the candidate has been appointed more SPA time may be agreed for activities such as undergraduate and postgraduate medical training which takes place outside direct clinical care, as well as research and/or management.  These activities must be specifically and clearly identified and be agreed with the candidate and desired by the department. 

There are trauma meetings everyday at 8.00am, with the Trauma theatre Consultant of the day leading the meeting
