Dear Parents,

This year our second grade students will engage in a different kind of science fair experience. Their science fair project will be inventions. Invention projects are designed to promote problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Your child will be following a step-by- step process to invent a new product or develop a new method for doing something.

Preparation for the invention projects began with students learning about inventors and their inventions. By doing this, we hope students will gain an appreciation for the invention process and thus be better prepared to create their own invention. The first step in the actual invention process was finding an idea for an invention. Your child was encouraged to find a problem that needed to be solved. Once your child has settled on an idea and researched it to make sure that the idea has not been used before, your child can then begin the planning and inventing stages. As your child engages in this process; we ask that you continuously encourage and monitor you child’s progress. Your support will help to make the invention process a fun learning experience for your child.

In addition, to inventing a new product or method, your child will be responsible for completing the invention report package attached with this letter. Please read the invention directions with your child and support him/her in following the step by step directions. Upon completion of their inventions, students will present their inventions at their school’s science fair. Here the inventions will be officially judged, and winners will be selected.

The winners of the school fairs represent their schools in the District-wide Science Fair which will take place during the second week of June. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher or the science teacher coaches if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your continued support,

Shirley Colman and Nancy Lasher

INVENTION DIRECTIONS

This year the second grade is expanding their science experiences by making an invention.

STEP 1

Students can begin by learning about inventions and inventors. The knowledge gained here will help students develop an appreciation for inventors and will help establish a positive attitude about the invention process.

Successful inventors:

*Keep an open and curious mind about the world around them.

*Constantly use trial and error as they engage in problem solving.

*Gather as much information as possible about an idea, problem, or future invention before beginning to invent.

*Are dedicated, persistent, and most of all, optimistic about finding a solution.

STEP 2

Finding a need to fulfill or a problem to solve is the second step in the invention process. The invention may be a new product or it may be a new process for doing something.

STEP 3

Students should create detailed plans for their invention. In the plans, the developmental steps are planned, preliminary drawings may be made, materials are listed, and testing the invention is planned out.

STEP 4

Students should build their invention. They will learn that plans may need to be changed along the way and that trial and error is a part of the invention process. In addition, they should do appropriate testing and record any necessary data for their report.

The last part to step 4 will be completion of an application that makes the student eligible for the Invention Convention. The application form has been modeled after the official U.S. Patent Office form and should be “notarized” by the school teacher.

STEP 5

The Invention Convention is the event students have been waiting for. It provides each qualifying student with an opportunity to display his or her project. On the designated date, students will bring their inventions to the selected site. Here the inventions will be officially judged, and awards will be presented. The Invention Convention will be open to the public.
