Big Nasty Hillclimb Proves Nasty

Big Nasty Hillclimb Proves Nasty (Once Again)

The only professional motorcycle hillclimb in the Northwest, the 5th annual, Big Nasty, once again sprang to life on September 14-16 and brought together its usual eclectic mix of interesting hillclimbers, machines and fans. The Big Nasty once again it lived up to its name; as only a total of 11 riders climbed the biggest, nastiest 540-foot hill over the entire weekend, and for the first time ever, not one single rider scaled the smaller, 252-foot trophy hill. Both of the hills gave most of the riders absolute fits.

Dubbed "The Big Nasty," the event was held on a scary steep, (62 degree) hill in an area called the White Cliffs, three miles north of New Plymouth, Idaho, near Big Willow Creek. A record number of 452 entries from nine states climbed several different hills over the weekend; a 252-foot hill was used for trophy riders and pro qualifying, and several different variations on a new, 540-foot monster were attacked by the pro and semi-pro riders each day. Known as “Idaho’s largest motorcycle event, the Big Nasty continued to grow and spectator attendance again hit a new record, drawing an estimated 11,000-plus spectators for the weekend who enjoyed perfect, 80F temperatures. “We finally nailed the weather this year,” said event director Ron Dillon. “Instead of the usual 105F temperatures that we have struggled with for the last few years, we actually had comfortable temperatures. That really helped our attendance to increase and many people thanked us for moving the date to later in the year.”

The record turnout did cause long lines to form as people attempted to enter Sunday’s event, and at one time, traffic on Big Willow Road was backed up across Highway 52 to within two miles of New Plymouth. Dillon said, “Sheriff Huff and his staff did a terrific job in helping us with the event. We talked about traffic prior and the law enforcement had a sound plan, but we were simply overwhelmed by the number of people who showed up Sunday morning. We will change some things around and modify the traffic plan to allow two lanes of traffic to enter at once next year which should cut the time in half needed to enter the venue. We increased our numbers of staff and volunteers to nearly 100 and still struggled to keep up with taking care of the crowd at times.”

The Woodstock feel continued to increase at the event and many other things went on during the weekend in addition to the hillclimb. Children played in an inflatable toy area, (The Little Nasty), the SCS Red Bull motorcycle stunt team performed motorcycle aerial tricks, including backflips, daily, and New Plymouth band, Envoy played a concert on Friday and Saturday nights which was followed nightly by the Big Nasty Film Festival which showed an eclectic collection of new and old motorcycle movies on the backstop. In addition, a street bike poker run was held on Saturday and a National Anthem (sung by New Plymouth’s Hillary Prince) and flag presentation ceremony began each day, courtesy of the US Navy Color Guard. Food vendors served up everything from hotdogs to Indian Tacos and assorted clothing, vehicle and other products also dotted the venue. “We completely sold out of sponsor and vendor space” said Dillon. “We actually had to start turning sponsors away a couple of weeks before the event and we simply could not believe how high the interest was in this year’s hillclimb. Not only did our event attendance, rider numbers and sponsorship numbers increase, so did our overnight spectator camping and we sold a record number of camping passes at the hill.”

Saturday’s action featured mostly riders on stock (trophy) bikes who attempted to climb the smaller 252-foot trophy hill. For the first time ever, not a single rider made it over the top, but a number of them put in some heroic attempts. Local off-road star, David Kamo, (who is slated to be a member of the 2008 KTM factory off-road team) finished eighth overall out of 40 riders in the highly-competitive Open 4-Stroke class with a run of 177 feet. Kamo later returned on Sunday to finish an impressive 9th out of 53 riders in his debut ride in the ultra-competitive, 700 pro class. Local motocrosser, Cody Conner, (Hus) (MotoTech/Cagiva USA) rode very strongly, putting his Husquvarnas at the top of the 250 and open 4-Stroke trophy classes, and well-known WMA pro rider, April Zastrow (Hon) handily won the women’s class and came close to beating Conner in the 250 4-stroke division. California’s legendary George Sauer (KTM) even got his eyes fixed and came out of retirement to finish a strong fourth in the Senior Pro men’s class. Now a young 87-years young, Sauer said he’ll return in 2008 to take another shot at the hill.

Sunday’s main event pro show consisted of three classes, the 450 main, 700 main and open main. The pro bikes continue to be some of the most exotic machines in motorcycling today and many are stretched out to nearly eight feet in length and run steel, chained or bolted paddle tires on the rear and use any type of fuel including nitromethane, alcohol and nitrous. Some of these motorcycles produced over 250 horsepower and as usual were incredibly loud, exotic and tempermental. Bountiful, Utah’s Jason Smith was one of only two 450 riders who were able to make it over the hill, with a winning time of 24.561 seconds. He returned later in the day to win the 700 pro class with a much faster time of 13.368 seconds. The Open pro class was topped by Cascade, Montana rider, CR Eisenheimer, who scored his first-ever professional win, taking his Suzuki 1400 over the top in 15.269 seconds.

The weekend ended with the King of the Hill Shootout, giving the top five Open and 700 bikes one more shot at the hill. Utah’s Jason Smith proved once again that it was his day as he pinned his 700, nitro-powered Yamaha and blasted over the hill in 16.011 seconds, putting another $500 in his pocket and his name on the Big Nasty “King of the Hill” perpetual trophy.

Next year’s Big Nasty Hillclimb will be held on September 12-14, 2008 and according to Dillon, discussions are already beginning on how to make the event bigger and better. “The event site is large, over 1,000 acres in size, and could accommodate a crowd of over 30,000 people if carefully managed,” he said.

The organizers wish to extend a hearty "helmets off" to the sponsors: MotoTech, Miller Light, Michael’s Idaho Powersports, Hanigan Chevrolet, Fruitland Outdoor Power Products, Blimpies, Holy Rosary Hospital, Edge Performance Honda and Suzuki, Red Bull Energy Drink, Les Schwab Tires, Boise Vintage Motorcycles, Buck’s 4X4, Nationwide Insurance, High Desert and Birds of Prey Harley-Davidson stores, The Double Diamond Saloon, Jaegermeister, Ontario Tool and Rental, Grizzly Sports, EZ Mart, KIVI and KTVB Television, KSRV, KWOW, J105 and the X Radio, Seventh Heaven RV, the Holiday Inn and Mirage Trailers. A big thank you is also in order to the small army of volunteers who helped, the Stony Creek Knuckleheads, and to the landowner, Tom Pence, and Rory Clinton of Shore-Line Pest Control, who fought the vicious, Payette County mosquitoes to a standstill for three days at the site and to IrvCo Construction who kept the dust down. Park City Helicopters kept everyone on their toes and the event could not have happened without the support of both the Ontario V&C Board, Payette City, New Plymouth City and Payette County officials and law enforcement personnel, as well as the Idaho State Police. For the third year in a row, the Fruitland High School video department filmed the event for three days and a 2007 DVD will be completed in a couple of months.
