LEADER PREPARATION

BIBLE BASIS

The conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman is the longest recorded conversation Jesus had with anyone. This seems surprising because Jews normally had nothing to do with Samaritans, and women were considered less than men. During the course of the conversation, Jesus tells the woman about “living water” and she asks him for some. She discovers that he knows and understands her needs, and she realizes that he is, indeed, the Messiah. This story can help kids understand that Jesus knows and understands their needs as well, and because he is the Messiah, he will give them everything they need.

DISCOVERY POINT

God gives us hope through Jesus.

BIBLE FOCUS

John 4:1-26

KEY VERSE

“Then Jesus told her, ‘I AM the Messiah!’ ” (John 4:26).

TEACHING PREP

The short overview below is designed to help you prepare for your lesson.

Supplies You’ll Need: Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, “Packages of Hope” handout, “Living Water” handout, paper or plastic cups, tissue paper, scissors, tape, pitcher of water, newsprint, markers, cassette recorder and cassettes, bottle of carbonated water or club soda, large clear glass pitcher or jar, and balloons

Before This Lesson

• Print the “Living Water” handout. You’ll need one copy per crew of four kids.

• Print and follow the directions on the “Packages of Hope” handout to create wrapped packages to put into the Bible Exploration Kits.

• Set out newsprint, markers, cassette recorders, and cassettes on a table for kids to use as they create their commercials.

• Inflate one large balloon for each Bible Crew. You might want to inflate a few extra in case some pop.

• Assemble Bible Exploration Kits (one per four kids): Bible, “Living Water” handout, wrapped package.

• Review John 4:1-26.

• Cue "Into the Bible" (Track 1) on the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD or (Quarter 7/Track 1) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD.

• Huddle briefly with your volunteers beforehand. Answer any questions they have. Encourage them and pray.

PARENT EMAIL

We’ve provided you with a “Family Devotion” handout to send the Bible learning and faith discovery home. When kids and parents have faith discussions regularly, kids’ faith multiplies.

So we’ve given you two options:

• Print the “Family Devotion” handout and make enough copies for each child to take one home.

• Email the “Family Devotion” to families before or after the actual lesson.

Or why not do both? That way you’ll double the opportunities for parents to actually get the handout.

2. When everyone has arrived, designate one wall as “Agree” and an opposite wall as “Disagree,” and ask kids to stand on an imaginary line between the two walls.

SAY: We’re going to play a game where you get to decide how you feel about the things I say. I’m going to read several statements. After I read each statement, stand on the line where you think you belong. So if you agree with what I say, you would stand closer to “Agree.” If you’re not sure, you’d stand in the middle. Let’s try one.

3. SAY: I have everything I need in my life.

Encourage kids to move to where they fit on the line. Once they’ve chosen spots, SAY: Now, turn to someone close to you and tell why you chose to stand where you did. Allow time. Let’s try another one: When I want something, I ask my parents for it and I usually get it. Have kids again move and then discuss with each other. And one last one: Jesus gives me everything I need. Have kids again move.

ASK:

• Why did you agree or disagree that Jesus gives you everything you need?

• What is the most important thing Jesus gives you that you need?

SAY: Even though we don’t always get what we want, God provides many, many things for us—in fact, he gives us everything we need. Many things are important that Jesus gives us. Today we’ll learn more about how God gives us hope through Jesus. Let’s meet a woman who met Jesus and discover how Jesus provided for all of her needs.

4. Start the “3-D Countdown” (Quarter 7/Countdown Track 1) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, and turn the volume way up. Lead kids in counting along. Then gather kids near you, and SAY: I’m so glad you’re here to have fun and learn about our awesome God today!

LET’S EXPLORE!

Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, CD player, pitcher of water, newsprint, markers, cassette recorder, cassettes

1. SAY: God gives us hope through Jesus today, just as God gave hope through Jesus to many people during his lifetime on earth. One of those people was a Samaritan woman; that means she was from a place called Samaria. Jesus was a Jew, and Samaritans and Jews didn’t get along in those days. But Jesus gave the woman hope anyway.

2. Have Bible Crews take the Bibles and the wrapped packages out of their Bible Exploration Kits, and ask crew members to sit in a circle. Help them find John 4:1-26.

SAY: Let’s find out what happened when Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well. I’m going to play a song, and while the music is playing, pass the package gently around your circle. When the music stops, the person holding the package will unwrap one layer of the tissue paper and read the slip of paper taped to the package. Then he or she will do what the paper says.

Play “You Are My Friends” (John 15:14) (Track 7) from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, then pause the song after kids have passed the package a few times. Have the person holding the package unwrap one layer, read the slip, read the passage aloud, and lead the group in discussing the question. Wait until crews have finished discussing, then begin the process again. Continue in this manner until the last layer has been unwrapped, revealing the cups.

SAY: Wow! We have cups that we can drink water out of, just like the woman at the well had a bucket to pull water from the well. Let’s have a drink from our cups. Have a volunteer go around and pour water in kids’ cups. While they’re drinking, SAY: Jesus offered the woman living water. He offered to forgive her sins, and he gave her a way to live in heaven forever. Jesus gave her hope.

ASK:

• How has Jesus given you hope like he gave the Samaritan woman hope?

• How can you praise God for giving you hope through Jesus this week?

3. Have crews take the “Living Water” handout out of their Bible Exploration Kits.

SAY: God gives us hope through Jesus, and we can share that hope with other people. Let’s make some commercials for living water. Have kids read through the directions on the handout, and point out the supplies they might use. Give crews a few minutes to create their commercials, and then have crews share their commercials with the whole group.

ASK:

• What is it like knowing that Jesus has promised you living water?

• What are some ways you can praise God for sending Jesus to provide everything you need this week?

• Which of these ideas will you follow through on this week?

SAY: Take a marker, and write your idea on your cup to remind you to praise God for the hope we have through Jesus.

LET’S PRAISE!

Supplies: Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, carbonated water or club soda, large clear glass pitcher or jar, balloons

1. Have kids remain in their Bible Crews. SAY: God gives us hope through Jesus.

The Samaritan woman discovered this hope through the living water Jesus promised her when he met her at the well. She came for regular water, but she found Jesus’ living water—the hope that he loved her and forgave her sin. We can have the same hope the Samaritan woman had. Jesus offered each of us living water when he died for our sin and provided a way for us to live with him in heaven forever. Now let’s look at another kind of water.

Pour some carbonated water into a large clear glass pitcher or jar.

ASK:

• What do you notice in the water?

SAY: That’s right—there are bubbles in the water. Just as the bubbles in this water rise to the top, when we have Jesus’ living water, we have a hope that helps us rise above sad or difficult things in our lives.

Have members of each Bible Crew stand in a circle, and toss a balloon into each circle. SAY: These balloons are kind of like the bubbles in the water—they represent the hope that Jesus gives us. Keep the balloons up in the air with the help of your Bible Crew members. Each time you hit the balloon up, say “Jesus gives us hope!” Allow time. Let’s continue to praise God for sending Jesus to give us hope.

2. Set up the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD or the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD. PLAY:

• “We Can Trust Him” (Psalm 33:4) (CD Track 6) (DVD Quarter 7/Track 6)

If there’s one thing we can count on,

It’s that God will never let us down, and

We can trust everything he does.

He keeps his promises.

We know because

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him. Yeah!

We can trust him .

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

• “Use Your Whole Body” (Romans 6:13) (CD Track 3) (DVD Quarter 7/Track 3)

So use your whole body as an instrument

To do what is right for the glory of God.

Everybody’s got one, now whatcha gonna do with it?

Are you gonna use it for good, for the glory of God?

Come on, everybody, let’s do this right;

Clap your hands, and keep it tight.

Come on, everybody, let’s move your feet;

Stomp ‘em real hard, stomp ‘em right on beat.

Come on, everybody, let’s do both things;

Do it for the glory of our great King.

So use your whole body as an instrument;

To do what is right for the glory of God.

Everybody’s got one, now whatcha gonna do with it?

Are you gonna use it for good, for the glory of God?

Clap your hands, and keep it tight.

Come on, everybody, let’s move your feet;

Stomp ‘em real hard, stomp ‘em right on beat.

Come on, everybody, let’s do both things;

Do it for the glory of our great King.

So use your whole body as an instrument

To do what is right for the glory of God.

• “The Spirit Gives Me Life” (Romans 8:10) (CD Track 4) (DVD Quarter 7/Track 4)

God is with me wherever I go.

Christ is in me, and I know that I know

’Cause he gave his life.

He lived and died.

(Chorus)

And now the Spirit gives me life, it gives me life, it gives me life

Because I have been made right, I’ve been made right with God.

The Spirit gives me life, it gives me life, it gives me life

Because I have been made right, I’ve been made right with God. Yeah!

The Spirit gives me life.

God is with me wherever I go.

Christ is in me, and I know that I know

’Cause he gave his life.

He lived and died.

(Repeat chorus.)

LET’S PRAY!

Supplies: cups from Let’s Explore!, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, CD player, carbonated water or club soda

1. SAY: We can carry the hope God gives us through Jesus throughout our lives, and we can share that hope with other people. Let’s do a prayer with water to help us remember the living water God gives us through Jesus.

2. Have Bible Crew members stand in a circle with their cups. Give one glass of carbonated water or club soda to one child in the circle, and have him or her pour most of the water into the cup of the next person. Have kids continue around the circle until everyone has a little liquid in his or her cup. As kids pour the water into the cups, they should say, “God gives us hope through Jesus.”

SAY: Now, take a sip of this water as you think about how Jesus has offered you living water and given you life in heaven with him. God wants to give you the gift Jesus offered the woman at the well. Pray silently and thank God for offering you living water.

As crews are praying, play the instrumental version of “My Help Comes From the Lord” (Psalm 121:2) (Track 13) from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD in the background.

HIGH FIVES

Supplies: balloons

SAY: As you leave, encourage the members of your Bible Crew. Toss a balloon to someone and say, “God gives us hope through Jesus,” and then give each other high fives.

FOR-EXTRA-TIME ACTIVITIES

Cups of Hope

Supplies: paper or plastic foam cups, markers

Have kids decorate cups with messages of Jesus’ hope to give to people in your church. Then have kids serve water in the cups to recipients as they tell them about Jesus’ living water.

Forms of Water

Supplies: ice, water, a hot teakettle full of water

Point out to kids the three different forms water can take. Discuss what happens to water in each form. Talk about what form we are most like when we have hope in Jesus—are we like ice? Are we like water? Or are we like vapor? Explain.

Create a Bible Dictionary

Supplies: paper, markers, dictionary, CD player, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD

Ask kids to create one or more pages, each with a new word, for a Bible dictionary. Have kids suggest words from today’s lesson—living water and Messiah are two suggestions. Have them write each word on a sheet of paper in fun letters, add a definition, list Scripture references, and make illustrations. Play “The Books of the Bible Song” (Track 8), from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD while kids work. Add each page to a three-ring binder, and watch the dictionary grow!
