The Armor of God

Gretchen Wears God’s Armor

Gretchen woke up Monday morning thinking about what she had learned the day before at church. Her leader had talked about putting on the armor of God every morning.

“That’s funny,” she thought as she was brushing her teeth. “ I can’t see God’s armor. How am I supposed to put it on?” After she got ready, she pulled out her Bible to Ephesians 6. She began reading at verse 10 and read until verse 18. Have students open their Bibles and read along with Gretchen in Ephesians 6:10-18. Ask them to keep their Bibles open to this passage.

“Well,” thought Gretchen, “I guess I can’t see God’s armor because this battle is not against other people but against spiritual things that I can’t see. I’ll just ask God to help me put on His armor and trust in His word.”

While Gretchen was waiting at the bus stop, she heard one of her friends, Brandon, talking about the grade he got on a test last week.

“My teacher graded my paper wrong,” Brandon said. “She gave me a higher grade than I was supposed to get. Am I lucky or what?” Gretchen was thinking about her armor of godliness. What do you think she told him?

When Gretchen got on the bus, she sat next to her friend Amanda. They started talking about the homework their teacher had given them over the weekend. Amanda said, “I didn’t have to do our homework this weekend. Could I just copy yours down and hand it in? Mr. Angeli will never have to know that I didn’t do the homework on my own.” Can you guess which part of God’s armor Gretchen was thinking about? What do you think she told her friend?

Amanda was really mad at Gretchen for not sharing her work with her. She huffed and faced the window. At first, Gretchen was so upset that her friend was mad at her, she almost told her to go ahead and copy her work. But then she remembered something about God’s armor that was part of her footwear. That made her feel much better inside. She laid a hand on Amanda’s arm and quietly said, “Amanda, it would be wrong to let you copy my homework. How about I help you do it before class?” Amanda turned to her smiling, “Okay! That’s a good idea.” What piece of God’s armor was Gretchen using?

Everything was going really well until science class. Mr. Angeli started explaining that the earth had not been created by God. Gretchen felt terrible! She knew that Genesis 1 explains that God created the world and everything in it. Then she remembered her shield of faith! How will Gretchen’s shield of faith help her to put out the flaming arrows of the evil one?

At lunch time, Gretchen was sitting next to her friend Ramon. He asked her about why she believed in God. He wondered if she had been listening in science that day. Gretchen smiled as she thought about the piece of armor that was sitting on her head. In her heart, she quietly asked God to help her tell Ramon about how much Jesus had done for her by giving her salvation. A verse popped into her head that she used to tell her friend about Jesus. Can you tell what pieces of armor Gretchen was using?

When Gretchen got home that night, she couldn’t believe that she had used all of God’s armor to help her through the day! She smiled as she thanked God for protecting her from the enemy!
