Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

Hafen Fruit & Vegetable Program a Success!

Hafen Elementary School was awarded a grant from the “Fruit and Vegetable Program” which allows students to sample fruits and vegetables that they may have never had a chance to try, as well as enjoy fruits and vegetables that they already love. Every Friday students are given a healthy sample prepared by Hafen kitchen staff. D'Anjou and Bartlett pears, Granny Smith and Red Delicious apples, kiwi, strawberries and a wonderful mix of blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are some of the delicious treats enjoyed.

Good News: Lower Electric Bills!

At the beginning of the school year, the Superintendent, Dr. Roberts, asked all schools to look for ways to conserve electric use. Hafen staff members went to work with brainstorming and then implementing ideas to cut down our KWH use. The results to date are below. We saved a significant amount of electricity with our ideas and efforts. Kudos to Hafen Staff!! The graph represents matched months from the 2007-08 school year to the 2008-09 school year.

Correct Dates for Spring Break

Library Corner by Mrs. Brooks, Library Specialist

We’ve all been very busy this quarter with preparation and administration of the state examinations for grades 3, 4, and 5. Students and teachers have worked very hard to be ready for tests in reading, mathematics, and for 5th grade, also science.

While we’ve concentrated on exams, parents have been busy supporting the school in a variety of ways. Some have been working through the PTO for the upcoming spring carnival in May, while others have made generous donations to help students with classroom and personal needs. Thank you for your kindness and support.

Field trips will be coming up for the students in grades 2-5, so watch for announcements and sign-up sheets for chaperones. If you can contribute toward field trip expenses, let us know. Each trip is funded by the school activity account (fundraiser money). Students must earn the right to attend an outside field trip by showing good behavior and academic effort.

The Awesome Authors Fair encouraged and produced some great writing by students, and the Family Math Nights have been a lot of fun. Watch for the science fair news in April. There’s always something happening at Hafen!

Sincerely,

Dr. Owens

TRUANCY HOT LINE (775) 751-4001

Dale Norton, Assistant Superintendent of Nye County School District announces an anonymous TRUANCY HOT LINE to call if you are concerned about a child not attending school. (775) 751-4001.

Mr. Norton adds that national statistics show high rates of truancy are linked to daytime burglary rates, vandalism and other crimes, keeping in mind that 75% of the criminals currently in the United States Prison system were habitual truants. When children are truant they normally take themselves away from the supervised learning environment that school provides and place themselves out into the community where, occasionally, they commit a crime against the community or have a crime committed against them. In order to combat truancy it is important that parents, schools, community, local businesses, social services, and other community groups join together. Nye County School District and Juvenile Probation have jointly established this TRUANCY HOT LINE (775) 751-4001 to:

➢ Help keep children in our community safe and educated

➢ Reduce the truancy rate

➢ Raise the awareness of the importance of school attendance

➢ Reduce the number of crimes committed by young people during school hours

The Nye County School District and Juvenile Probation Depart. thank you for your help and assistance on behalf of the children of our community.
