IQ Measure Assignment | |

Objective

The purpose of this assignment is to give you a chance to think about some issues involving analyzing the quality and usefulness of a measure.

Assignment

• Obtain an IQ measure (from anywhere: a book or article, magazine, online…). The following website may provide a start: (Hint: It will be easier to complete the assignment if you use a measure for which you can see all, or at least a good portion, of the items simultaneously.)

• Examine the measure and provide detailed answers for the questions below. For each question explain why you provided the answer that you did.

• Turn your typewritten answers into

• Include a copy of the measure with the assignment that you hand-in in class.

1. Description of the test

• Provide the name and any other identifying information regarding the measure (author, publisher…) that you have.

• How would you describe the test? (For example, 12 multiple choice questions with 4 choices each).

• Provide the test directions if any.

• Describe the type of items represented (e.g., logic, word recognition…).

• Who is the target audience for the test?

• How long would it take to complete?

2. Validity

• Face Validity -- Do the questions appear to tap into IQ? (Hint: providing a definition of IQ may help you to answer this question).

• Predictive Validity -- Do you imagine that this measure would predict something that it logically should? (IQ is believed to be positively correlated with future academic performance, income, job success, stable marriage, and staying out of jail – do you think this measure would be?)

• Concurrent Validity – Do you think this measure correlates strongly with something that it logically should? (For example, GPA?)

3. Reliability

• To what degree would this test give consistent results? (For example, would someone get the same score if they took it now and 5 years later? 2-weeks later?)

4. Critique

• What are the tests major strengths and weaknesses? (Reflect on your answers above or report additional insights.)

• For what subgroups might this test not be valid?

• If you were to revise this measure, what would you do?

5. Reflection

• How does this assignment relate to your considerations/decisions regarding measures that you may use in your study?
