Guidelines for Creating an Individual Development Plan
An Individual Development Plan (IDP) is a plan of action, a blueprint for developmental success. In the plan, specific steps are identified that will lead to achievement of developmental objectives.
Each objective should relate directly to the development needs identified. The development plan identifies those skills and behaviors most necessary for success.
At NASA, the IDP contains the following sections:
1. EMPLOYEE INFORMATION: Name, date of plan, current position, center, length of time at NASA, summary of prior work experience, education background/certifications, and training taken last year.
2. SELF ASSESSMENT: Summary of skills and competencies. For example:
• Functional expert for spacecraft electrical power conditioning systems
• Two years experience as a sub-systems lead for electrical systems.
• Excellent understanding of GSFC strategic mission
3. SHORT- AND LONG-TERM GOALS: Development/career goals. For example:
• Become a project manager for a small to medium project.
• Gain additional experience as sub-systems lead for systems outside of electrical systems.
4. DEVELOPMENT NEEDS: Areas that need to be developed in relation to goals (skills/competencies, completion of degree, exposure to other areas of the Agency, etc. For example:
• Ability to lead high-performance work teams
• Exposure to other sub-systems design and development.
5. ACTION PLAN TO ADDRESS DEVELOPMENT NEEDS: Type of action that would best meet identified development goals and needs. Strategies and resources to implement the plan. Development strategies (special assignments, formal training, job rotations, etc.
EXERCISE: WRITING ACTION PLANS TO ADDRESS DEVELOPMENT NEEDS
DIRECTIONS: Write down a job-related development need. (Example: Improve comfort level and effectiveness in dealing with different people and groups.) Then write an action plan to accomplish the objective. Use these elements:
1. Start each action step with an action verb. (Example: Take a course in Interpersonal Skills and solicit feedback from peers)
2. Identify resources needed to ensure success. (Example: Course registration and support from peers.)
3. Provide a deadline/timeline. (Example: September 2009)
