A sample position description is provided at the bottom of this document for illustrative purposes. Your position description should be formatted in a similar manner.

Position Description Instructions:

Step 1: Go to the following site: . This is the O*NET (Occupational Information Network) website. O*NET is a comprehensive database of worker attributes and job characteristics. O*NET is the nation's primary source of occupational information.

Click on "Find Occupations" link. On the new screen, search for your subject’s occupation using a keyword search. Type in their occupational title and press search. You may have to try several variations of title before you find the occupation that best matches your subject’s job and job title.

After you enter the code click the "Go" button in the bottom of the table. A list of occupations should appear. Choose an occupation to explore it further. A new window should open.

Step 3: In the new window, you should see the job title, an identification number, a brief description of the job, and several buttons. Click on the "Details" link. On the new screen, click on the "Tasks" link. Copy the tasks and paste them in your word processing program. Take some time and look at the information provided by the other buttons. How do the knowledge, skills and abilities listed in O*NET compare to the ones you came up with in your job analysis?

Step 4: Now click on the link labeled "Job Zone". Copy the Overall experience and education information in the Job Zone table and paste it into your word processing program.

Step 5: Develop the position description using the sample description as a guide.

Step 6: Compare and contrast the knowledge, skills, and abilities provided in O-NET to the your list of KSAOs from your job analysis subject. Describe any striking similarities and differences you note. Speculate as to why O-NET’s information may be different from your information (“Because they were collected by a professional analyst.” is not a legitimate speculation.)

Perform complex medical laboratory tests for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. May train or supervise staff.

Education and Experience

Overall Experience: A minimum of two to four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is needed for these occupations. Education: Most of these occupations require a four - year bachelor's degree, but some do not.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of immunology, transfusion therapy, and phlebotomy; ability to conduct blood supply inventory, and make judgments of present and predicted blood supply demands; ability to evaluate donor acceptability through an assessment of current health status and an interview concerning disease history; etc.

ILLUSTRATION OF DUTIES

1) Cuts, stains, and mounts biological material on slides for microscopic study and diagnosis, following standard laboratory procedures. 2) Examines slides under microscope to detect deviations from norm and to report abnormalities for further study. 3) Analyzes samples of biological material for chemical content or reaction. 4) Selects and prepares specimen and media for cell culture, using aseptic technique and knowledge of medium components and cell requirements. 5) Harvests cell culture at optimum time sequence based on knowledge of cell cycle differences and culture conditions. 6) Prepares slide of cell culture to identify chromosomes, views and photographs slide under photo- microscope, and prints picture. 7) Cultivates, isolates, and assists in identifying microbial organisms, and performs various tests on these micro-organisms. 8) Examines and tests human, animal, or other materials for microbial organisms. 9) Conducts chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components. 10) Performs tests to determine blood group, type, and compatibility for transfusion purposes. 11) Studies blood cells, number of blood cells, and morphology, using microscopic technique. 12) Cuts images of chromosomes from photograph and identifies and arranges them in numbered pairs on karyotype chart, using standard practices. 13) Conducts research under direction of Microbiologist or Biochemist. 14) Communicates with physicians, family members, and researchers requesting technical information regarding test results. 15) Calibrates and maintains equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, and computer-controlled analyzers. 16) Enters analysis of medical tests and clinical results into computer for storage. 17) Sets up, cleans, and maintains laboratory equipment. 18) Performs related work as required.
