FROM:Jennifer Haft, Women’s Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Angelica Docog, Women’s Chamber of Commerce Board of DirectorsDATE:11/20/2017RE:A Tribute to Women – 300 Years in the MakingThe San Antonio Women’s Chamber of Commerce requests support from student interns from local universities to include UTSA, A&M-SA, Trinity, Our Lady of the Lake, UIW and Alamo Colleges to research, design and present historical biographies of thirty women who have made a significant impact in San Antonio throughout the past 300 years. Research will be required to select the top 30 women candidates who have made significant strides or impact within Texas and San Antonio. The looming 300th anniversary of the founding of San Antonio and the 30 anniversary of the founding of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce make this project especially timely. This will be an interdisciplinary venture involving UTSA’s Institute for Texan Culture, student researcher, applicable faculty and the Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Yvonne Katz, Women’s Chamber of Commerce, Angelica Docog, Institute for Texan Culture and Jennifer Haft, A&M-SA will serve as the project’s principle contacts. Much of the preliminary research and design will be performed by a student intern, selected through a competitive process, during the latter of the fall 2017 semester and spring 2018 semester. The final product will be turned over to the San Antonio Women’s Chamber of Commerce by August 31, 2018 for final preparation and showcase at the San Antonio Women’s Chamber of Commerce Annual Gala on November 10, 2018. The preliminary budget projection is $1,500 which will provide one $500 fall and one $1,000 spring scholarship to the selected student intern responsible for the research and required documents. We envision detailed research that includes a short bio, significance to San Antonio/Texas and various photos that will be used for the exhibit portion of the project. Each decade will be represented by one or two notable women, document of historical evidence of outstanding accomplishment throughout the eras. The exhibit should be appealing to both local residents who can learn about their community’s past, and to tourists interested in exploring more of the city’s heritage. The student intern will participate in three stages of the project’s development. Meet with the project principle contacts, (Docog, Haft, and Katz) to identify key themes or learning objectives that will guide interpretation at many of the sites. Examples of possible learning objectives might include the following:?What significant role did women play in the evolution of early Texas? Are any of thewomen known from a national perspective? How did these women enliven the San Antonio culture as it is known today??How have these women changed the climate or culture for women overall??The vital role significant women played in luring people to the area.?The sometimes tempestuous relationship of the women with the larger community/society?Draft a list of potential Women of Significance that will be shared with the Women’s Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.Project final project materials including bio and background information, story of contributions to San Antonio/Texas and, medium for presentation/exhibit.Proposal applications are available online at and must be completed by Friday, December 8 at 5 p.m. Upon notification from the SAWCC, the selected candidate will begin work immediately.
