Promising jobs future in San Bernardino County

New research affirms what we've known in San Bernardino County for several years -- that we have fast become Southern California's hub for

emerging 21st-century employment opportunities.

The Workforce Roadmap study, conducted for the county's Workforce Development Board (WDB), shows that manufacturing, logistics and healthcare will account for 55 percent of all job growth here in the coming years.

Impressively, San Bernardino County is outpacing the state in terms of manufacturing growth and has emerged as the nation's leading hub for logistics and goods movement.

Preparing workers to do those jobs is something we all have a stake in.

As an example, the Workforce Roadmap report shows that San Bernardino County's labor force participation rate among prime working-age adults has been trending down, particularly among those with less than a high school education.

The report notes that if we raise that participation rate to that of neighboring counties, an additional 33,000 to 108,000 jobs could be filled with local talent.

A group of students from San Bernardino's Arroyo Valley High School spent their spring break working on research projects. But the week was more fun than it sounds. The teens were building robotic people, animals, and even a space creature that talk and move in brief theme park-style shows.
