Nancy Carol Rheney Newsome, age 65, of Monticello, died Wednesday, May 09, 2012, at her residence.

Nancy Newsome was born in 1947 in Sandersville, Georgia to the late Joseph S. Rheney and Phyllis “Dody” Simons Rheney of Tennille, Georgia. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in History. She worked at the Georgia Historical Commission in Atlanta where she was in charge of locating and researching historical sites throughout Georgia so that they could be placed on the National Register. She married her high school sweetheart, Glenn Newsome, and they taught high school in Dahlonega, Georgia. After moving to Jasper County in 1975, Nancy became the Director of the Monticello Jasper County Chamber of Commerce. As an advocate for education, she was the first woman to serve on the Jasper County Board of Education. She also served as Chair of the Jasper County Library Board. She worked as a volunteer for Hospice at the Jasper County Retreat and later as a volunteer in the office at Jasper Memorial Hospital. Nancy was a member of the Monticello Presbyterian Church where she was a part of the church’s Handbell Choir for 11 years. Her church family meant so much to her. Nancy deeply loved her children and they were the joy of her life. She also loved animals and cared about their well-being. Sister, Patricia Rheney Boggs, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Glenn, and their four children: her son Jonathan Newsome and his wife Natalie of Tennille, her daughter Lauren Bush and her husband Thomas of Tyrone, her sons Benjamin Newsome of Garberville, California, and Patrick Newsome of Miranda, California; and granddaughter, Charlotte Nancy Bush. She is also survived by her brother Joey Rheney and his wife, Ann of Morgantown, West Virginia; and nephews, Lt. Col. Christopher Rheney and wife, Beth; Deas Nealy and wife, Jen; Barten Nealy and wife, Allison; and Brannon Nealy and wife, Mandy and all the nephews’ children.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 11, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. at the Monticello Presbyterian Church. The family will hold a private graveside service at Zeta Cemetery in Tennille. Rev. Rindy Trouteaud and Rev. Phillip Dennis will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be John Stork, Nixon McWilliams, Robby Kelly, Jimmy Jordan, Thurman Willis, Don Kelly, Bobby Norris, and Tim Mullins.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Jordan Funeral Home.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Jasper County Humane Society, P.O. Box 463, Monticello, Georgia 31064; or Jasper County Food Bank, 139 W. Washington Street, Monticello, Georgia 31064; or the Monticello Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 308, Monticello, Georgia 31064.
