Disclosure Process

Disclosure Tips (9/22/10)

Has your department secured industry support for an educational program? If the answer is “yes,” you are required to disclose the funding to the participants.

Trainee Programs

For trainee programs, OII has drafted a letter that the Program Director must send to all trainees in the program. To obtain a copy of the letter, please contact Jennifer Riconda (MGH) or Erin Stewart (BWH).

Conferences, Patient Education, and Other Programs

You must disclose all commercial support to the participants of any Partners educational event (including CME, patient education event, educational websites, etc.). Generally, there are no strict requirements regarding how you must disclose commercial support. However, some companies have contractual provisions in their agreements requiring you to disclose support from that company in a very particular way. Please check your commercial support agreement and/or with OII.

Although Partners has no strict requirements for how you disclose commercial support at conferences, OII has provided examples of how you might disclose such support below.

If your event has an introductory speaker, s/he could make the following statement orally or on an introductory slide:

This program has received support from the following companies in the form of educational grants: AstraZeneca, Boston Scientific Foundation, and sanofi-aventis.

If the program has an educational booklet, brochure binder, website, etc, you could make the following statement on the first page:

This booklet/brochure/website has received support from the following companies in the form of educational grants: Genzyme, Medtronic, and St. Jude Medical Foundation.

When disclosing online, in brochures, etc, the preference is to list the supporters alphabetically, using standard font (i.e., no logos), and not according to the amount contributed to the program. If logos are being used, the logos must be the same size.
