The Training Post- Winter 2020Question Corner: What was your favorite workplace memory from 2019??Three weeks into my new job at NJ OIT, I was summoned to Payroll to collect my first paycheck. I announced my exciting mission to my cubicle mates and then made my way to the fourth floor. Suffice it to say a good portion of my first fourteen days at the OIT offices were spent wandering around on four different floors looking for HR, the Union rep or Craig Parker. Therefore, it was no small relief when the handover of the paycheck occurred without a hitch. Check in hand and a spring in my step, I headed back to my workspace. In the dimly lit hallway, I saw RC, greeted him, just grateful that I remembered his name and continued down the hallway to the end, where a turn around the corner would bring me to the sun-drenched cubicle that I share with my teammates. The turn was unmemorable, but what I saw and experienced in the next three seconds, was nothing short of surreal. The cubicle had been wiped clean, with no trace of people or equipment. I stood there at first petrified that I had walked into a space-time continuum and then the very next second, it occurred to me I had been pranked, and I marveled at how my new teammates managed a trick with such swiftness and sleight. Another long second later, it dawned upon me that I was on the wrong floor! Flush with embarrassment, I quickly looked around to ensure there were no witnesses to this folly, then tiptoed my way to the stairwell, praying I would not run into RC again. After 18 years in the private sector, my first State paycheck will always be the most memorable!Sharon Siao OITI started working for early intervention at the DOH in June 2019. I received such a warm welcome -flowers, cards and food. I have never started a job with such sincere warm heartedness from my new colleagues. It is REALLY a blessing to have such an amazing "work family".Rachel Ledden-AlbadineFHS - Early InterventionMy unit held a chili cookoff in December. In one of our conversations she told me that she is 87 years young, and although she is not as mobile as she used to be she still has her right mind. This lady was a successful Ironbound resident who owner several homes and had even sold one to a prominent Newark Police Chief and her daughter as is turned out is my dental hygienist for 25 years. These type of customer interactions is what it is all about as a civil service employee.Alonia JoynerNEWARK NJMy favorite memory from 2019 was receiving the phone call from the NJ MVC offering me my current position. I have never been a serial applicant, but I have perused a few job opportunities with the State of New Jersey a few different times. However, nothing seemed to be a true fit. Meanwhile in early 2019 I was in the middle of a multi-day training regimen for my thenemployer. Unfortunately, because I forgot to mute my cellular device, one of those “comical ringtones” played to alert me of an unknown number calling my device. I stepped out of the training session that day and to my surprise it was a phone call that changed my life. I had been offered my current position within the Motor Vehicle Commission. Maybe the proverbial stars were in alignment, maybe I shined the day that interviewed, either way I am excited and privileged to work alongside a wonderful group of talented professionals. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to add a cornucopia of competencies to my professional skillset. I am making purposeful and positive change as I help drive New Jersey forward one mile at a time. As I have said to many people since then, have I ever told you how much I love my new position?Karl MillerMVC ................
