MantecaYouth Focus Tour

The Manteca Museum & Historical Society was the last stop on a multi destination tour on June 23, 2021, for the Manteca Youth Focus, led by Doug & Kristen Scott. The tours of the main building and the memorial building were conducted by Jeanette Farley, Jim Moore, Jackie Smith, Beverly Ensley and Mike Brockman. They enjoyed the photo display of former winners as well as an encased tiara donated by a former Miss Manteca. MYF is comprised of youth between the ages of 10 & 20 years from local public and private schools. The primary goals are to further members' educational goals, participate in volunteer service, develop their unique talents and abilities with a sense of pride in their community. After the tours were complete, the group was treated to a box lunch from the Iron Horse Deli completing their busy morning. A drawing was held for the current history book of Manteca "Images of America" by museum member Melinda Pacheco Patrick. All guests were encouraged to come back to the museum with their families & friends. Drawing winner was Miss Manteca 2019/20 Sydnee Navarro.

THE MUSEUM

Portuguese Pottery dates back to prehistoric times, verified by the archaeological exhibits in Portuguese museums. Terracotta urns stored wine, water and olive oil."Caldas da Rainha" - The Queen's Hot Springs- just north of Lisbon is the unofficial center of pottery in Portugal, because of the abundance of clay deposits and wonderful ceramics. Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro in 1884 opened a factory of decorative pieces that made the town famous. Alcobaca, a small town which belongs to the Caldas da Rainha region,is most famous for the ceramic pieces that are handpainted blue, the ones we are more familiar with as tourists. These have a similar appearance to "Flo Blue" Pottery. Coimbra Pottery represents the eastern tradition. The 17th century blue and color drawings that represent hunting scenes. The Arab influence during the 15th century shows up in feathers and plumages of birds in the 18th century. My personal exhibit in our Manteca Museum has primarily pieces from different factories in Alcobaca and Agueda, Portugal. The factories in Agueda are Outeiro. In Alcobaca the factories are: Vestal and Faireal. If you are wondering if I traveled to Portugal to find my collection, that is a big, fat "NO." They came from years of searching at estate sales, garage and yard sales, good will hunting and thrift store sales. In 2016, I did travel to Sao Miguel, Acores and did visit the "Ceramica Vieira." where I did purchase some small ceramic items that would fit in my suitcase.

Hope you enjoyed learning a little about Portuguese pottery. Please enjoy the exhibit.

THE MUSEUM

The museum recently received a photo of the 1920 era ranch on South Union Road known at the Davis Ranch. This ranch encompassed over 80 acres and went all the way to Yosemite Ave. Larry Rego of Oakdale donated the photo showing his family members who were from the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores and rented the ranch and ran a dairy for many years. Arnold Rothlin, museum member, also has an original photo that hung in Lucca's Bar in Oak Street until it was sold and went out of business. The two had many stories and questions to ask, spending several hours reminiscing about Manteca history.
