Algebra I Course Syllabus

Dear Parents and Students:Welcome to Algebra II Honors! I am looking forward to working with you and making this a productive and successful school year. Algebra II Honors is a rigorous course that will challenge you to think critically and become a problem solver. We will study many topics, apply what we learn to solve real world problems, prepare for the Virginia Standard of Learning (SOL) examination, and prepare for your future mathematics courses. In this syllabus, you will find the information you need to be successful in this class.323786517399000Overall Grading Policy23812519551659 Weeks GradeBreakdown:Tests: 60%Quizzes: 30%Homework: 10%009 Weeks GradeBreakdown:Tests: 60%Quizzes: 30%Homework: 10%Classroom ParticipationStudents are encouraged to participate and ask questions each and every day. Students will be graded on classroom participation based on the following factors: completion of classroom assignments, coming to class on-time and prepared with an organized binder, computer, and a pencil, following directions, avoiding non-math related conversations, attempting to answer questions when called upon in class discussions, and working with team on class assignments. It is expected that all students will follow all school policies while in the classroom and will participate in a positive manner. Also, notebook checks will occur at random and will constitute a quiz grade. Each day, write your notes in a clear and legible manner, record the date and objectives for the day, and record all steps used in solving each example.HomeworkHomework is a key component for success in Algebra II. Homework will be assigned on a daily basis. Math is a skill based subject and it is essential that students practice each skill that we learn in class on their own to ensure that they have both learned the skill and are prepared for a quiz and/or test on the skill. Homework is graded on effort and completion, not on accuracy. Remember, while it is acceptable to work with other students on homework that copying another student’s homework is an honor code violation. Late homework will not be accepted. Please note that you must copy the assigned problem and show all work. Credit will not be awarded if you show only the answers. Show your work!5534025-38100MoreAlgebra Two Course InformationAlgebra II is a demanding course filled with new concepts that will enable you to further develop your problem solving and critical thinking skills. You will become skilled in solving all types of problems while at the same time preparing for the end of course Standard of Learning (SOL) Test. We will cover each of the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) for Algebra II to ensure that you will have the knowledge essential for success on the SOL test. Other topics beyond the scope of the SOL will also be studied in preparation for subsequent mathematics courses and the SAT. Topics that we will study include:→ Solving equations→ Operations with complex numbers → Graphing, writing equations & completing transformations for lines, quadratics, and other functions→ Working with composite & inverse functions→Simplifying rational expressionsSuccess in Algebra II will prepare you for other mathematics courses needed for higher education.00MoreAlgebra Two Course InformationAlgebra II is a demanding course filled with new concepts that will enable you to further develop your problem solving and critical thinking skills. At least three tests will be given each nine weeks and will always be announced several days in advance. Please try to avoid being absent the day before a test as it will be a review day. Because the test will have already been announced, you will still be responsible for taking the test on the assigned day. Quizzes will typically be announced; however, students will occasionally have unannounced quizzes. On the occasion that a quiz is unannounced, students will be able to use their notebooks.Make Up WorkMake up work is YOUR responsibility. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain the notes and specific assignments. I encourage you to exchange phone numbers and email addresses with classmates so that you can stay on top of your work when you are absent. Also, most course information will be posted through school space so this should be the first place that you look when you are absent from class. In the event that you miss a quiz or a test, it is your responsibility to schedule a time to make up the assignment. You must talk with me to schedule a time to make up any missed assignments on the day you return to school. Finally, it is your responsibility to schedule a time to meet with me if you do not understand a topic that was covered while you were absent as you will still be responsible for all topics on quizzes and tests.Supplies3-Ring Binder with 2 sections Notebook Paper and Graph PaperPencils ( work in pen will receive a 5% deduction)TI-84+ Calculator***There are several l items that I can use to help maintain a productive classroom. It will greatly help our class if you can provide any of these items: AAA batteries (to power our calculators), dry erase markers (we go through a lot of markers!), and colored markers (for projects). We also go through a lot of tissues! Thank you for your support. If you come to class EVERY DAY, participate, complete all assignments, and put forth your BEST EFFORT, you will be successful in this class. Good Luck! Mrs. Conway ................
