Note: (a) In 1995, the College Board decided to "recenter" the SAT I score scale. Recentering had the effect of reestablishing the average score on the SAT I at the midpoint of the 200-800 scale. This was done, according to the College Board, to make comparisons of an individual student's score to the whole group easier to understand and interpret, and easier to compare an individual student's own verbal and math scores. One consequence of the adjustment, however, was the fact that most students received scores on the verbal section that were higher than those that they would have received prior to recentering. The higher scores began with the students entering in 1996. (b) In 2002, the Trustees of the College Board voted unanimously to develop a new SAT I. The new test will be administered beginning March 2005. A writing test was added, including multiple-choice questions and a student-written essay. The Verbal Reasoning Test has been renamed the "Critical Reading Test" to emphasize the importance of reading. The math test has been expanded to include topics from Algebra II and quantitative comparisons have been eliminated. (c) In 2016 the College Board changed the SAT test again with a 400 to 1600 point scale. The table above shows the new scoring in two parts starting in 2018: "Evidence-Based Reading and Writing" section and a "Math" section.
