Chapter 18: Test Taking Strategies

Use the links below to complete the internet exercises for this chapter.

Internet Exercise 18-1

Locate the web site . Kaplan/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins is an example of a test preparation company that addresses testing for numerous standardized tests and some professional tests such as nursing. Separate preparations exist for the Pre-College tests of ACT and SAT, the Graduate Tests of GRE and MAT, and nursing’s NCLEX®.

1. Examine the introductory descriptions of the various tests.

2. Take sample test items.

3. Identify the resources available to prepare for the tests. Do these resources meet the studying, budget, and learning styles of the tester?

4. What company guarantees, if any, are offered to the test taker who fails the examination?

5. What is the length and method of preparation?

Internet Exercise 18-2

Locate the web site ® . The Pearson Vue company administers numerous computerized tests including the NCLEX® for nursing licensure. There are two sections of this web site that offer information to the visitor interested in the NCLEX® and the testing centers where the NCLEX® is scheduled so the graduate can prepare for the test type and the testing environment.

1. Take the NCLEX® tutorial which provides samples of various types of test items used on the NCLEX® exam.

2. Note that the NCLEX® test taker will be audio taped and videotaped while taking the NCLEX® exam.

3. Use the calculator available during some test items.

Pearson Professional Center

1. The NCLEX® is taken at a Pearson Professional Center (PPC). Test preparation includes being familiar with the testing environment.

2. Take the on-line PPC tour. What is available to the tester while taking the NCLEX® at a PPC? Specify the items required for admission to the center. If distracting noise occurs, such as finger nails tapping on computer keys, during the testing, what solutions are available to the tester to minimize the distractions?

3. Listen to the QuickTime Video about the NCLEX®.

Internet Exercise 18-3

Locate the website . The web site is the home page of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Every state board of nursing is accessible through links at this site. NCSBN authorizes, following job analysis research of new graduates, the test plan for the NCLEX® (PN and RN). The site also contains access to the NCSBN products produced for test preparation.

1. What test preparation resources does the bar labeled “NCLEX® Examinations” offer the visitor?

2. Compare the “candidate” and “educator” NCLEX-RN® test plans. Describe the essential features of each. Which is most helpful for NCLEX® preparation?

3. Print the NCLEX® test plan for testing preparation. The test plan is free.

4. Review the sample NCLEX® test items. These are located in at least two sections of this site.

5. Find the “Student” section to access a diagnostic test for the NLCEX and to access an on-line preparatory course for the NCLEX®.

6. Sign up to receive the NCLEX® Test Item of the week.
