From the Principal’s Desk
Welcome back: We have had a very settled start to the year. I commend the students on their effort and behaviour to allow this fantastic start to the 2011 school year. Many thanks to our parents for supporting us in our endeavours, and congratulations to our staff for their hard work.
Staffing 2011: Mrs Flannery has returned from leave and we warmly welcome her back to teaching 3/4K and supervising teachers 3-6 this year.
Meet the Teacher Afternoon: Today 22nd February. 3:10pm-3:40pm
All parents/carers are encouraged to come up to school to meet their child’s teacher. Teachers have planned this time to introduce themselves to parents and tell them a little about their class and the school routines. Parents are encouraged to meet their child’s teacher in their child’s classroom at 3:10pm.
Please assist your child’s school: A voluntary contribution is requested from parents to support your child’s education. The amount requested at Ambarvale PS is $20 a student or $30 a family per year. This money will be used to purchase additional educational equipment and the resources to support our students. We appreciate any contributions and request that they be sent to the school office. An envelope was supplied to all families last week.
High School Enrolment for Yr 6 students: This week all Year 6 students will be bringing home some important forms about starting high school. Parents need to complete the ‘Expression of Interest for Placement in Year 7 at a NSW Government Secondary School in 2012’ form and return this to school by Monday 28th February.
‘Crunch and Sip’ Program: We implement ‘Crunch and Sip’ each morning. To help your child participate please provide your child with a water bottle and a small piece of fruit or vegetable each day. The fruit can be any variety, whole or chopped (eg. apple, chopped melon or strawberries) or vegies such as carrot or celery sticks. Other drinks or foods are not permitted in the classroom. We hope that having access to a healthy snack mid morning will help improve students’ concentration.
Reminder- We are a nut free school: Parents please help us to keep all students safe by ensuring your child does not bring food containing any nuts to school. We have students who are highly allergic to these foods and your support helps to minimise the risk of them having a potentially life threatening reaction.
Please ensure that you have returned to school the following:
• 2011 Updating Student Information, Contacts and Medical Information note.
• Special Religious Education (Scripture) note
• Swimming Carnival note- For students in Years 3-6, and students turning 8 in Year 2.
• Blue Student Information sheet- to return to teachers.
Easter Raffle: The P&C are seeking donations of Easter eggs for their Easter raffle. Families are requested to donate an Easter egg to their child’s classroom. We will have a ‘mini’ competition between classes to see which class can bring in the most eggs. Remember all money raised from the P&C goes directly back into the school to benefit our students.
Scripture: The first Scripture lessons for the year begin today at 10:30am. We thank our scripture teachers for their flexibility while we made some changes to our school organisation of Scripture. Thank you to our parent/carers for returning the notes sent home to assist us in forming our classes and to Miss Page for her excellent organisation.
Absence Notes Booklets: All families were supplied with absent notes booklet for completion when students are absent from school. We requested parents/carers return absence notes on the day the students return to school. All co-operation is appreciated.
School Uniform: It has been wonderful to witness the high standard of school uniform at our school. Many thanks to parents for their support in ensuring their child comes to school each day in the correct school uniform- it not only looks wonderful but promotes pride in appearance and in being part of our school. Congratulations to the students who are wearing the school hat. We strongly encourage all students to wear a school hat to fully support the implementation of our school uniform.
First Assembly 2011: Thank you to our parents and guests for attending our first K-6 assembly yesterday. This was the final assembly that students could trade their Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum awards from the 2010 school year. Our new award system is now in operation.
Swimming Carnival next Monday: Primary classes will be involved in the swimming carnival at Mount Annan Leisure Centre on Monday 28th February 2011. Students in Year 2 who turn 8 this year are also invited to attend.
The cost of the excursion is $10.00 (This covers pool entry and bus fare). All children attending the carnival should travel on the bus. Classes will depart from school at 9:00am and return to school by 3:00pm.
Children should wear their sports uniform, sports shorts, a hat and a T-shirt in their house colours. Students should wear covered shoes – NO THONGS. Children may wear their swimmers under their uniform or change into their swimmers at the pool.
Please make sure your child brings the following items clearly labelled:
*Swimmers *Hat *Towel *Sun screen
*Lunch *Recess *Drinks (No glass bottles) *A plastic bag for wet things
(No crepe paper streamers are permitted at the pool.)
We are once again looking for volunteers to help out on the day as time keepers etc. If you are able to assist please fill out the slip below and return it to the office by Thursday 24th February.

Student Behaviour and Discipline Policy: We have high expectations of our students in terms of their behaviour. When there are strong student welfare practices operating within a school, the focus can be directed on what matters most - quality teaching and learning. We seek parents’ support when issues arise in terms of students’ behaviour. When the school and home are working in partnership, we can attain the best results for our students.
We encourage students to implement the following 3-Step Program to assist students dealing with a problem in the playground:
1. Say, “STOP!. I don’t like that”
2. Ignore or move away
3. Report to a teacher
One procedure within our discipline system is for students to spend time on ‘Reflection’ if their behaviour is serious enough or consistently inappropriate. When students spend time in the Reflection room, they are counselled about their behaviour and complete a behaviour journal. This journal is sent home the same day for parents to view and sign. We ask parents to discuss the concerning behaviour with their child and improved steps they could take next time. This discussion will support the actions taken place at school. NB: Students are required to return the Reflection Journal sheet so further actions at the school level do not occur.
Please note that any act of physical violence is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. In such instances, consequences for students will be serious and in accordance with our Student Welfare Policy.
Administering Medication: It is important to remember that schools are not permitted to administer medication which has not been prescribed by a doctor (this includes Panadol, Neurofen, cough mixture.) If students need this type of medication parents need to be available to administer it.
Prescribed medication can only be administered if:
It comes with a written request from the parent
The medication is in it’s original packaging, clearly marked with the child’s name, dosage, time of dosage etc
Playtime and Transition Program for Years 0-5- It is free!
Our playtime and transition program operates each Monday morning from 9:15 am- 11:00am. This free program operates in one of our classrooms (Breakfast Club Classroom) and is staffed by three wonderful, experienced staff. We look forward to seeing many new faces on Monday. Please contact our school office if you require further information.

Let’s talk Library
Library borrowing begins this week and many students have already demonstrated their eagerness to borrow. Students will need a bag in order to borrow.
Permission notes will go home this week for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Infants classes will be completing their challenges in class whilst primary students are expected to complete theirs at home. Upon completion of the challenge, students will need to hand their forms into the library for them to be validated. This is an annual challenge and it would be great to see more students participate this year.
Book Club orders were placed last week and should be delivered soon. The school was able to purchase $845 in reading resources during 2010 and this was due to the generous support of the parent community.
This year’s Library Monitors have begun their training and have so far been an eager and hardworking group. I look forward to working with them throughout the year.
Reading Tip: Encourage your child to re-read favourite books and poems. Re-reading helps kids read more accurately and quickly.
‘Read to learn’
From the Pastoral Carers Desk
Welcome back to all students & families and a special hello to Kindergarten, I hope you enjoy your future learning here. Ambarvale Public School is a caring school community with a strong P&C involvement and a wonderful staff providing great support and learning opportunities for students. It is a privilege, for me, to be part of this team.
The position of Pastoral Carer at APS is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment & Workplace Relations (DEEWR) under the National School Chaplaincy Program. The program is available to the whole school community as a voluntary option without any obligation to participate.
My role is to provide welfare and pastoral support to the school community with a focus on students, staff and families. Some of the programs I have supported include a gardening group, Breakfast Club, sports groups, parent courses, camps and excursions.
Now is a great time to think about an important aspect of achieving good results at school – your attitude. Your attitude and approach to school can make all the difference. When you are looking for the negatives, that is all you focus on. So this year, be someone who looks for the positives in life…What can you enjoy in your subjects this year? What do you like about your teachers this year? What are you good at and how can you improve in other areas? Every time you catch yourself thinking a negative thought, stop and think of a positive aspect of the situation instead. You will be amazed at the difference it makes to your results and to your personality.
I look forward to another action packed year at APS and hope everyone has a fabulous 2011.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is a need.
Cheers,
Rob Hodgson JP
