This FEMA in Higher Education funded project was designed with that divide in mind. Our goal is to develop a textbook for use in advanced undergraduate and introductory graduate courses that will focus the attention of academic/practitioner teams on critical contemporary issues related to disasters. For each issue, academics and practitioners will be selected to describe what we “know.” Researchers will be asked to focus on the scientific findings and practitioners will be asked to discuss patterns and variation in national policies/state of practice. The focus of the project will be on facilitating an exchange of ideas between these communities and developing a vision for how their insights could be brought together to make emergency management systems better.RequestWe are currently searching for individuals and/or practitioner/academic teams that are interested in contributing to this textbook for a number of pre-identified topic areas. We are currently looking for authors to address the following issues (in no particular order):Vulnerability Resilience Integration of Persons with Access and Functional NeedsInequity and Emergency ManagementEvaluating and Acting on RisksMitigation Measures Individual Preparedness Insights on the Whole Community ApproachPrivate Sector IntegrationThe Creation and Maintenance of Plans and PoliciesPlanning and Improvisation During Disasters Reflections on NIMS Volunteers and Non-ProfitsAlert, Warning, and Notification SystemsMediaSocial MediaAfter Action, Exercises, and EvaluationLong-term RecoveryEmergency Management as a ProfessionStrategic vs. Tactical Emergency ManagementNeglected Issues in Emergency ManagementYou will note that this list reflects a diverse set of topics. As such, we welcome suggestions from interested authors on how they would approach writing about these areas. We are also open to contributors proposing topics they believe would fit in such a pensationEach contributor will receive a $500 honorarium for their efforts.Interested in contributing?Send an e-mail to either of the volume editors: Dr. Joseph E. Trainor, PhD jtrainor@udel.edu or to Tony Subbio, CEM, MS, Tony.Subbio@ for additional details. We will respond to questions from interested contributors on a rolling basis, but we expect to select all participants by the end of July 2012. If it appeared in dictionaries (which it doesn't yet), it would look like this:dis.as.ter med.i.cine (di zas' tor med'i sin) n 1. the study and collaborative application of the professional skills of diverse medical and public health specialties to provide "crisis management" (altered standards of care) in mass casualty incidents 2. not the same as conventional medical care 3. requires a fundamental change in the approach to the care of patients in order to achieve the objective of providing the "greatest good for the greatest number of patients 4. requires knowledge of the fundamentals of disaster management, specific injury patterns commonly encountered in disasters and the ability to work as part of a multi-organizational response teamIndependent and strictly peer-reviewed, guided by a internationally recognized editorial review board and accepted for inclusion in the National Library of Medicine's prestigious PUBMED database, American Journal of Disaster Medicine is designed for those of us who will find ourselves on the frontlines of a major disaster. The CEMR is making is finalizing this study and will be releasing its findings in the coming days. Our team has made significant discoveries into the methodological challenges of conducting community hazard risk assessments. More importantly, the CEMR with support of its partners have identified potential solutions that will increase the accuracy and reliability of the community risk assessments.Although this research was not finalized prior to the release of DHS’ Threat and Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (THIRA) Community Preparedness Guidance 201, its findings will have vast implications on the practice, principles, and policies of comprehensive emergency management. From hazard mitigation to core capabilities and community vulnerabilities to long-term recovery, this study will have a profound impact on risk management policies and practices as well as the profession. The CEMR is honored to be selected for this important research that will influence the profession. (ATT)Description:? Social science research conducted since the late 1970s has contributed greatly to society's ability to mitigate and adapt to natural, technological, and willful disasters. However, as evidenced by Hurricane Katrina, the Indian Ocean tsunami, the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, and other recent events, hazards and disaster research and its application could be improved greatly. In particular, more studies should be pursued that compare how the characteristics of different types of events—including predictability, forewarning, magnitude, and duration of impact—affect societal vulnerability and response. This book includes more than thirty recommendations for the hazards and disaster community. The strategy must:Be geared to expanding the pools of core, periodic, and situational hazards and disaster researchers.? Evolve from collaborative efforts by stakeholders in government, academia, professional associations, and the private sector.Approach hazards and disasters inclusively rather than separately as societal risks.? Emphasize the need for a larger, more skilled, and more diverse social science workforce to address what is not known.? While disasters remain non-routine events in societies or their larger subsystems, the actual and potential impacts of these events equate with their increasing prominence as public policy issues.? Addressing these issues will require the best efforts of social science researchers and also their willingness to collaborate with each other and their counterparts in the natural sciences and engineering.?
