Linda Shepherd and Carol Collier are planning to attend the 98th annual OI Convention in Quebec City on June 30th through July 2nd. These ladies will be representing Golden Circle as well as attending training sessions which will help them in their NC East District positions next year.

Linda is Lt. Governor-Elect for our Zone and Carol is Secretary/ Treasurer-Elect for the District, and they will each attend training for these new roles.

This year's convention will also include

opening ceremonies, two business sessions, motivational speaker Swen Nater (aka Seven Feet of Inspiration) and a chance to meet the leaders for Optimist International.

It should be interesting to see how many new ideas they bring back to our club as well all that motivation that they will be spreading among the rest of us back in the Golden Circle.

We are asking these ladies to bring back pictures and interesting stories to share. but most of all we are asking them to "amusez-vous bien!"

The Golden Circle sponsored a midget league baseball team this year. All the team members are 78 years old and have played some awesome baseball this season.

We have enjoyed going to many of their games and watching them as they gain more skills at each of their games.

Their final game of the season is scheduled for Wednesday, June 1st, at 5:30 pm. Directly after the game, our club will host the team, their coaches and their parents at a cook-out at the Optimist Shelter

Golden Circle Golf Tournament - A Huge Success!

Golden Circle held its seventh annual golf tournament fundraiser on Friday, April 29th, at Willow Springs Country Club.

Through the hard work of several members, this year's event produced record profits for the club to use for our upcoming service projects.

We had 10 teams, almost 50 hole sponsors and 50 businesses and individuals who donated door prizes and gift certificates for our raffle. We sincerely appreciate our members working so hard to obtain these results and we especially thank all the businesses and golfers who helped to make it a record year for our club! The total profits raised through the tournament including the raffle and mulligans was just over $5,900!

Golden Circle to Receive $500 Grant

Optimist International has notified our club that we will be receiving a $500 matching grant. Our club applied for the grant in March to help with our End of Treatment Bell Project. President Linda Shepherd will accept the check in Quebec at the International Convention.

that makes the difference.

Respect For Law Banquet - May 5th

This year's Respect For Law was a five-star event! It was held at Something Different Restaurant and we honored officers from EMS, Fire & Rescue, Police Dept, Sheriff's Dept, and Highway Patrol.

Also on hand to help with introductions and presentations were students and staff from each of our three local high schools and from Eastern NC School for the Deaf.

The first part of the program honored officers and personnel who are "one of our own," which meant they were ei- Jourdan Pope and Greg Henry (Fire & Rescue), Tanyanika ther Optimist members, family of Opti- Wiggins (Sheriff's Office), Holly Evans (Police Dept.), Daniel mist members or Safety Resource Offi- C. Harrell (Highway Patrol), and Brenda Dew (EMS) cers for the local high schools.

After a wonderful dinner, guest speaker Frank Perry, Secretary of NC Dept. of Public Safety delivered an inspiring message to help honor all those who serve in law enforcement and safety.

The final portion of the banquet was recognizing and honoring the top officer in each service area.

Special thanks go to Kathy Sandifer and the Respect For Law committee who did a fantastic job with this special event. Much time and planning went into this spectacular banquet.

We were happy to have Wilson Daily Johnnie Coleman (SRO for Beddingfield HS), Phil Batts (Silver Times staff at the event and were very Lake Fire Dept.) William G. Stewart (Retired Judge), Michael pleased that our event was featured on Sumner & Phil Batts (Fire & Rescue), Craig Moss (Governor's the front page the very next morning! Highway Safety Office), Edith H. Ward (SRO ENC School for

the Deaf) and Brandon Hickman (SRO for Hunt HS).

ELOISE REGISTER

We will miss our Optimist Sister, Eloise Register. She had a beautiful smile and gave it to us generously.

She was a fun-loving, yet dignified lady. She loved her family, her church, her Sunday School class and her Optimist club. She also enjoyed accompanying her husband Marvin as he exhibited his Model -T cars.

Marvin is a long-time member of the Wilson Evening Optimist Club.

OPINION POLL - What is Your Favorite Club Project?

Kathy Sandifer - I appreciate our club reaching out to the residents at Longleaf to place them in the spotlight who are often ignored but need support the most. I also enjoy the spaghetti fundraiser because it was the first one I participated with when joining the club. I appreciate all the projects which enable us to help others in some small way.

Betsy Winborne - I like the golf tournament, even if am not much help in getting teams, etc. I also think the parties we have at Longleaf and the Children's Home are wonderful, as most of the things we do are. I think doing something is better than just giving money to a cause. Supporting in other ways.

Linda Shepherd - My favorite fundraiser is the golf tournament. My favorite project of "doing good" would have to be our involvement with the Little League team. They are so cute, and they are learning so much about working together as a team, a skill that is needed throughout life! I am so glad we decided to sponsor them.

Brenda Carter & Janice Lamm - We think the Valentine's Day party at the Children's Home in Middlesex is the best!

Linda Watson - I like the Golf Tournament and believe it is the best fundraiser we can have, it gets better each year and I expect it will continue to get better.

Sara Robbins - I enjoy helping with the parties at Long Leaf Pine and anything Ronald McDonald!

Ann Cook - I like our Childhood Cancer project, raising money for childhood cancer and helping children with cancer.

Angela Iwaniuk - I have enjoyed our baseball team this year and I love the parties we have at the Children's home and Longleaf, it is great to have interaction with others and see all those smiling faces! I believe I am going to like the Helping Hands Awards as we do it each year. I also love our fundraisers - we have some awesome ones!

Dot Windham - The children's Valentine party that we have is the most fun! Our golf tournament is a great money-maker and provides us the money necessary to do all of our community projects and the golf tournament is fun also!

Jean McLamb - I enjoy our golf tournament, I enjoy the time our members have together for fellowship during the tournament and also enjoy the fact that we make enough money to fund our other projects.

Carol Collier - I think my favorite project is giving scholarships to two deserving youth that exemplifies what our creed states. I think it is important to help these young people further their education and hopefully they will return to Wilson County and give back to our community.

Isabelle Flock - I haven't had time to see many of our projects yet, but I believe I will like the Lighthouse Bell that we are donating to Vidant Hospital in Greenville. That project really seems special to me.

Celia Wise - I really like most of our projects, but I am partial to Childhood Cancer and also the scholarships that we give to Wilson County students. These are both such worthwhile projects!

GOLDEN CIRCLE QUARTERLY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Linda Watson

Way back on Sept. 30, 1987, Linda Watson was one of more than 40 charter members who formed the Golden Circle Optimist Club. When asked what prompted her to join the club, Linda says it was a good reason to get herself out of the house (not to be a couch potato) and she also liked doing good things for kids.

All of us who know Linda understand one important thing about her - she is a hard worker. No matter what project we have, no matter what type of fundraiser we try, Linda is always there and always doing her best to make it successful. It seems that this quality has been evident in Linda in all of the 29 years that she has been a member of our club.

Linda has served as President, Secretary and Treasurer several times over the years. She can always be counted on to help the Golden Circle. Linda is loyal and hard working. In recent years, Linda has served as District Lt. Governor and held District chair positions for the NC East District.

Linda has always brought extra resources to the club through her husband Depratt. In the early years Depratt would sit at the Antique Barn so that the ladies could work on Christmas wreaths until as late as 9 pm without having to be worried about being alone at night. While there, he would help move the scrap clippings out and bring in the new branches for clipping.

Depratt continued to help in this way until the club stopped making Christmas wreaths a few years ago. Today he can be counted on to help with our Oratorical contests as time-

keeper and in any other way that he is needed. He has been an official Friend of Optimist member since 2011, but has been our honorary member for many more years!

Linda explains that meeting Depratt was fate. Her family moved around a lot, and she named almost a dozen schools that she attended within Wilson County because they moved so much. She attended Rock Ridge High School for only 3 months before they moved back into town and she went back to Charles L. Coon and graduated from Fike. That 3 months was just long enough for Linda and Depratt to meet, and the rest is history!

In the early years of our club, the club also moved around a lot and met at different places all the time. Some of the places they met were Bill's, Priscilla's, First Citizens Bank, members' homes, Western Sizzlin', and The Rib Room to name a few. She believes that after they started meeting at Something Different, the club had more of an anchor.

Also in the early years the club's main and sometimes only fundraiser was making Christmas wreaths. Linda enjoyed it but didn't like being out at the barn for so many hours between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The early club did try making candles, having auctions, selling chicken pastry plates, and even hosted a 2-day softball tournament, but Christmas wreaths was their mainstay.

We are so proud that Linda is still helping our club stay strong and active! Thank you, Linda, for all you do!
