SYNOPSIS

The highly anticipated sequel to one of the scariest films of all time, [REC] 2 picks up 15 minutes from where we left off, taking us back into the quarantined apartment building where a terrifying virus has run rampant, turning the occupants into mindlessly violent, raging beasts. A heavily armed SWAT team and a mysterious government official are sent in to assess and attempt to neutralize the situation. What they find inside lies beyond the scope of medical science—a demonic nightmare of biblical proportions more terrifying than they could have possibly imagined.  Above all it must be contained, before it escapes to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting world outside.

DIRECTORS’ STATEMENT

A film is not completely finished until it takes shape before an audience for the first time. This is what infuses it with its first breath of life. Beginning at that very moment, and every time someone watches it on future occasions, the film continues to develop and is transformed, through life. It is transformed into an autonomous body that can exist independently, well beyond the control of its creators.

In the case of [REC], this phenomenon reached unusual proportions for us. Right from the start we witnessed the way our film became stronger at each screening. By watching it, each new viewer gave it greater independence, more strength and force to continue developing. We too discovered new secrets, new unknown factors in the plot, new viewpoints. Each time it was as though we were losing it and it was becoming the property of the audience. And, above all, it was increasingly becoming itself. On many occasions, during the presentation of the film to mixed audiences, spectators would approach us with questions and offering angles we’d not previously encountered. Strange and apparently salient details we weren’t aware of. Then one day we met up to discuss the secrets and mysteries we ourselves had created. We wanted to know more about them. To investigate the possibilities of what we’d only sketched out. To discover more and recount it once again.

[REC]2 comes courtesy of the audiences who infused life into its predecessor. Their enthusiasm and imagination. In some way they’re the ones who created it. It’s their fault.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS

JAUME BALAGUERO (Director)

Born in Lerida, Spain. Jaume Balagueró holds a Masters Degree in Audiovisual

Journalism from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

This unique young director has quickly built up a great reputation both in his

native Spain and internationally. Much of this is due to his first feature film, The

Nameless, a film lauded by critics and audiences alike, and his box-office smash

Darkness, which boasted a superb international cast including Anna Paquin,

Lena Olin, Iain Glen and Giancarlo Gianini. Darkness was released with great

success in Spain and around the world, including in the USA where it took 25M$

at the box-office, setting a milestone in the history of Spanish cinema. His long

awaited third feature film Fragile, starring Calista Flockhart, Richard Roxburgh

and Elena Anaya, premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, and was

another big hit at the box office when it opened in Spain and other countries.

Afterwards came To Let also received its premiere at the Venice International

Film Festival. It forms part of the ambitious television series 6 Films To Keep

You Awake, produced by Filmax Entertainment and Estudios Picasso.

After the success of [REC], codirected by Paco Plazá and Jaume Balagueró, a

film celebrated by audiences and industry alike, Paco Plaza and Jaume

Balagueró are back with the same idea but a completely new fear with [REC]2,

bringing a new twist to the horror genre.

Jaume is currently working on Flatmate, a new project, again with FILMAX.

PACO PAZA (Director)

Born in Valencia, Spain, Paco Plaza holds a Masters Degree in Audiovisual Journalism from the San Pablo CEU University in Valencia.

Plaza’s debut feature film was Second Name, with a script that he co-wrote based on Ramsey Campbell’s book of the same name. This film announced the arrival of this young director as one of the emerging talents of the “fantastic” genre, a position consolidated by the Silver Méliès that he was awarded in Sitges at the Catalan International Film Festival in 2002. The horror thriller Romasanta: The Werewolf Hunt was his second feature film for Filmax Entertainment’s label “Fantastic Factory”. The film was released worldwide, and was distributed by Lions Gate in the USA. Then followed Xmas Tale, part of the ambitious television series 6 Films To Keep You Awake, produced by Filmax Entertainment and Estudios Picasso.

After the success of [REC], codirected by Paco Plazá and Jaume Balagueró, a film celebrated by audiences and industry alike, Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró are back with the same idea but a completely new fear with [REC]2, bringing a new twist to the horror genre.
