I. Scholarly Activity in Two-Year Colleges

Statement about scholarly activity on the Grant Macewan College Application Form for Faculty Research and Scholarly Activity Fund.

WHAT IS A SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY?

A “scholarly activity” is one that has an impact extending beyond the individual faculty member and his/her students by contributing to the individual’s discipline/profession, and/or that entails the creation/application of new knowledge. Scholarly activities include (but are not necessarily limited to) the following:

• conducting formal research projects

• writing and publishing books or articles

• writing case studies

• developing innovative teaching materials with a wider application than one's own teaching

• producing literary, musical and artistic works that are appropriate to one's discipline

• preparing papers and posters for scholarly or community conferences

• engaging in consultation or field work with a wider application than one's own activities, and which contributes to one's discipline

• facilitation of research-to-practice or policy-to-practice initiatives

For example, attending a conference is not generally recognized as a “scholarly activity”, but preparing a paper for presentation at a conference is. Preparing for or carrying out one’s own teaching activities (such as by utilizing a new teaching technique) is not generally recognized as a “scholarly activity”, but sharing that new teaching technique with others within a formal venue (such as through publishing an article in a journal on teaching, or conducting a workshop to teach others how to use that technique) is.
