Reference Collection

The library has specialized encyclopedias covering a variety of subject areas. These reference books may be useful for gathering background information, definitions, statistics, and brief bibliographies on specific topics. Some examples are listed below:

Research Databases

The library provides online periodical index databases in which the researcher may search by topic to locate citations, abstracts, and sometimes full-text articles published in newspapers, magazines, and scholarly journals. Please Note: When a database does not provide full text for a relevant article, search the library’s Periodicals list to see if the Kean University Library holds the desired publication in print or through another database. Refer to the instructions under the Periodicals Listing heading on page 4 of this handout.

Listed on the next few pages are several databases that will provide access to articles relating to health topics:

EBSCO

EBSCOhost is an online platform that provides access to a number of different databases, many focusing on a particular subject area or type of article. Many of these databases provide access to full-text journal and magazine articles. To access the EBSCO databases from the library’s Databases page:

( Go to the Kean University Library Homepage ().

( Click Databases.

( Click EBSCOhost.

( Click EBSCOhost Web.

( Select a database or databases -- such as Academic Search Premier, CINAHL, MasterFile Premier, and Alt HealthWatch -- from the list of databases provided.

( Click Enter.

( See the descriptions given below for a number of the EBSCO databases:

Academic Search Premier is a multidisciplinary database that provides full text for more than 3,600 scholarly (peer-reviewed) publications in areas of study such as social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, arts and literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies.

CINAHL is a nursing and allied health database that provides indexing and abstracts for over 2,700 current journals that focus on health topics.

PsycInfo and PsycArticles are databases that provide access to scholarly articles in the field of psychology.

Alt HealthWatch is a database that provides access to scholarly articles relating to alternative medicine.

Nursing & Allied Health Collection: Comprehensive is a database that provides full-text articles from periodicals focusing on nursing, biomedicine, health sciences, consumer health, and allied health disciplines.

MEDLINE is a database that indexes journals focusing on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and so on.

MasterFile Premier is a multidisciplinary database that provides full text for nearly 2,000 general reference publications, as well as access to biographies, primary source documents, and an Image Collection.

CINAHL with Full Text provides full text for 329 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health.

Health Reference Center

Health Reference Center is a database that provides access to scholarly articles on topics such as fitness, pregnancy, medicine, nutrition, diseases, public health, alcohol and drug abuse, and much more. To access Health Reference Center from the library’s Databases page:

( Go to the Kean University Library Homepage ().

( Click Databases.

( Click VALE.

( Click Subscribed Databases.

( Click Health Reference Center located in the second column.

( Click Proceed.

( Click Health Reference Center Academic to search for scholarly journal articles. Alternatively, you may click Health and Wellness Resource Center to search for non-scholarly, consumer health articles.

( The search form defaults to Subject guide search. Instead, click Keyword search on the left-hand side of the screen to access a basic keyword search form.

( Enter your key terms in the search box underneath Click in the entry box and enter search term(s):

GenderWatch

GenderWatch provides access to diverse publications that focus on “how gender impacts a broad spectrum of subject areas.” Full-text articles are often provided. To access GenderWatch, follow these steps:

( Go to the Kean University Library Homepage ().

( Click Databases.

( Click VALE.

( Click Subscribed Databases.

( Click GenderWatch.

( Click Continue to access the Basic Search form.

Ethnic NewsWatch

Ethnic NewsWatch provides access to full-text newspaper, magazine, and journal articles “from ethnic, minority, and native presses.” To access Ethnic NewsWatch, follow these steps:

( Go to the Kean University Library Homepage ().

( Click Databases.

( Click VALE.

( Click Subscribed Databases.

( Click Ethnic NewsWatch.

( Click English or Español to access the Basic Search form.

LexisNexis Academic

LexisNexis Academic provides access to full-text articles from news, medical, legal, business, and general reference publications. To access LexisNexis Academic, follow these steps:

( Go to the Kean University Library Homepage ().

( Click Databases.

( Click Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe.

( Click Medical on the left-hand side of the screen.

( Select Medical News or Medical Journals to access a search form.

( Alternatively, click either News or Reference on the left-hand side of the screen.



is a reference database that provides wide-ranging information on current-event topics, including coverage of health issues. To access , follow these steps:

( Go to the Kean University Library Homepage ().

( Click Databases.

( Click .

( Click one of the buttons on the upper right toolbar, such as Today’s Science or World Almanac. The Issues and Controversies section, in particular, provides helpful information on current social issues.

( Alternatively, enter search terms in the search box on the left.

Periodicals Listing

When any database does not provide full text for a relevant article, search the library’s Periodicals listing to see if the Kean University Library holds the desired publication in print or through another database. To do this:

( Go to the Kean University Library Homepage, .

( Click Periodicals.

( Click Kean’s Periodical Listing.

( Enter the name of the journal in the Quick Search box. Click Go.

If the journal title appears in the results list with a checkmark under the Print Holdings column, this means that the library holds the journal in print format. If the journal title appears in the results list with a checkmark under the Full Text Access column, this means that full-text online articles from that journal are available for the date range indicated through the Database listed immediately below the journal title. If the journal title does not appear on the list, you may request a photocopy of the desired article through Interlibrary Loan.
