Start researching local scholarship opportunities at . The Winston-Salem Foundation coordinates many scholarship opportunities for high school seniors. Most of the scholarships may be used at any college/university. The one-stop application opens on January 1, 2019 with a deadline of April 1, 2019 for merit scholarships and July 31, 2019 for need-based scholarships.

Many state universities, like Clemson University, the University of South Carolina, the University of Alabama, the University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, Penn State University and The Ohio State University, have scholarship programs for out-of-state students with specific GPA and test score credentials-look closely at schools that interest you. There are many more with scholarship programs that fit students with strong academic records.

ROTC PROGRAMS-The Reserve Officers Training Corp is a college program offered at over 1,700 colleges and universities across the US that prepares young adults to become officers in the US Military. In exchange for a paid college education and guaranteed post-college career, cadets commit to service in the military after graduation. MOUNT TABOR PTSA SCHOLARSHIPS-Join the PTSA by January 1, 2019 to be eligible for $500-$1,000 ACADEMIC, ARTS & ATHLETIC scholarships

JOHN MONTGOMERY BELK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM @ DAVIDSON COLLEGE

Criteria: Seniors with the following attributes: intellectual depth and academic achievement, strength of character and integrity, global awareness, commitment to service, and leadership ability and potential for continuing impact (MT may nominate ONE or TWO seniors)

Awards: Eight Belk Scholars will be chosen, each receiving an annually renewable scholarship equivalent to the college’s comprehensive fees (valued in 2017-18 at $65,819)

GOODNIGHT SCHOLARS PROGRAM @ NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY

Criteria” North Carolina seniors who intend to major in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) or STEM education disciplines at NCSU; 600 seniors who apply for admission by November 1, 2018 will be selected to apply; family income of less than $110,000.

Awards: 50 four-year scholarships of $17,500 per year with more opportunities for study abroad, unpaid internships, entrepreneurial endeavors and other personal and professional development opportunities

CENTENNIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM @ NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY

Criteria: Students who ae interested in career fields such as engineering, business management, chemistry, polymer chemistry, forensics, medical fields, international studies, design, apparel, sourcing, fashion, merchandising or retail management---some of the career areas of graduates from the College of Textiles (two MT students may be nominated)

Awards: Several scholarships up to $15,000 per year for four years

WINSTON-SALEM/FORSYTH COUNTY EMANCIPATION ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: Students who have shown academic excellence (3.0 GPA or higher), character and service to school and community (winners are announced at the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Emancipation celebration on Monday, January 1, 2018 at 11:00 am)

Awards: Several $1,000 scholarships

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION “MOST VALUABLE STUDENT” SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: High school seniors based on SCHOLARSHIP (50%), LEADERSHIP (40%), FINANCIAL NEED and QUALITY OF APPLICATION (10%); successful applicants are usually at or near the top 5% of the class and have SAT scores exceeding 1200 (CR & M) or similar ACT

Awards: Local Regional, State, and National scholarships (500 four-year awards), ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 per year-six local scholarships (3 male and 3 female) will be awarded; top scholarship at national level is $50,000

ELKS LODGE NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: Applicants must be pursuing acceptance into a Nursing Program which, upon completion, qualifies the students for taking the nurse licensing exam; students in the top 25% of class are strongest applicants

Awards: $1,000 local and state scholarships

Deadline: December 8, 2018 (Mr. Huck will deliver all completed applications to the WS Elks Lodge #449 on December 7)

Criteria: Open to all seniors on the basis of character and a 500-1000 word essay: When you look back on your life in 30 year, what would it take for you to consider your life successful? What relationships or accomplishments will be important on this journey?

The Richard and Elizabeth Dean Academic Scholarship is available to high school students with 4.0 GPA ($5,000 scholarship)

DANFORTH SCHOLARS PROGRAM @ WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS

Scholarship program for students who have exhibited a capacity for service and leadership, as well as academic excellence, and will embrace the challenges of a rigorous academic curriculum. CHEATHAM-WHITE SCHOLARSHIP @ NORTH CAROLINA A & T STATE UNIVERSITY/NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY

Criteria: This is a new full scholarship program; eligible students are exceptional scholars with a broad range of interest, proficient in areas of arts and sciences, and demonstrate strong leadership potential and commitment to service; cumulative weighted GPA of 4.0 and 1280 SAT or 28 ACT.

MOREHEAD-CAIN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM @UNC-CHAPEL HILL

Criteria: The program is a unique educational opportunity that includes a full four-year undergraduate scholarship, a laptop computer, global travel, real-world work experience, and summer enrichment experiences for students who embody the four selection criteria: leadership, scholarship, moral force of character, and physical vigor. Additionally, the following adjectives identify the attributes of successful M-C nominees: bright, collaborative, self-aware, brave, purposeful, empathetic, optimistic and original. Three MT seniors may receive school nominations while other highly qualified MT seniors may apply directly.

Awards: Approximately 75 full four-year scholarships (about one half from NC high schools)-includes tuition and other expenses, including student fees, housing, meals, books, supplies, travel and miscellaneous and a fully funded, four-year Summer Enrichment Program, and a laptop computer

Criteria: The program provides a superb educational opportunity for exceptionally talented and well-prepared young men and women to develop in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Two MT seniors may receive school endorsements while other highly qualified MT seniors may apply directly (outstanding students who are not endorsed by their school may choose to self-endorse by October 25, 2013).

Awards: Approximately 37 full scholarships-$111,000 (two-thirds to NC residents) with personal computer-$2,200, and grants to fund additional enrichment experiences

Criteria: Exceptional high school seniors that demonstrate commitment to community engagement, passion for learning that is reflected in an excellent academic record and capacity for ethical leadership that beckons fellow students to a higher standard; successful candidates will have a GPA (unweighted) of 3.8-4.0 and score 1900-2400 on the SAT or 29-33 on the ACT

WENDY’S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN AWARD

Criteria: Female and male scholar-athletes entering their senior year of high school in the 2017-18 academic year who have at least a “B” grade average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport; female and male high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership are encouraged to apply.

Awards: One male and one female from Mount Tabor will be named school winners in late October; State Finalists will be announced in November; State winners will be determined in mid-November (the first 25,000 students that complete an application will win a $10 Wendy’s Gift Card.). National winners receive: Recognition during ESPN broadcast of Heisman Trophy presentation, a trophy; recipients can receive a scholarship worth $1,000 up to $10,000
