with junior status and above given preference until funds exhausted. Also,

30% is reserved for male students.)

➢ You must submit a new application each year you wish to be considered for a scholarship.

MTI Minority Teachers of Illinois Scholarships--Who Can Apply?

Minority Teachers of Illinois Minority individuals who are of African American/Black, Hispanic American,

Scholarship: Asian American, or Native American origin. Consult the definition on the

Application. At least 30% of funds are reserved for male students.

✓ The teaching obligation is fulfilled by teaching full time at a nonprofit Illinois public, private or parochial preschool, elementary or secondary school at which no less than 30% of the enrolled students are minority students as certified by the ISBE each year.

REQUIREMENTS (THERE ARE OTHER REQUIREMENTS):

• Be a minority student.

• Be a high school graduate or hold a GED certificate.

• Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at an Illinois higher education institution in a program which culminates in certification by ISBE as a preschool, elementary or secondary teacher.

• Eligible students includes those in graduate studies and post-baccalaureates pursuing teacher certification. Enrollment must be at least half time.

• Submit the MTI application—fully completed—which includes the “Teaching Agreement/ Promissory Note”.

• Maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

• Be a resident of Illinois, and a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen of the U.S.

Scholarship pays up to $5,000 per academic year(covering tuition, fees, room/board expenses for a maximum of 8 semesters (4 academic years).

Applications received by March 1st of each year are processed starting in May until completed.

Teaching obligation is one year for each year in which scholarship assistance was received. If the teaching requirement is not completed within the allotted time, the amount awarded converts to a loan that is repayable with interest; rate for 2012-2013 is 5%.

➢ Students cannot receive the Illinois Special Education Teacher Tuition Waiver (SETTW) or the Golden Apple Scholarship of Illinois Program during the same term(s) for which the Minority Teachers of Illinois Scholarship (MTI) is received.
