Scholastic Reading Inventory Print Version

Scholastic Reading Inventory Print Version

Product Overview

Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) Print Version is a paperbased reading comprehension assessment that provides schools with fast and accurate information. The tool features:

Two alternative forms for pre- and post-testing Consistent whole-group test format for Grades 1-12 Authentic text-based questions that test comprehension of written literature, not just vocabulary Lexile measures and correlations to grade-levels and normreferenced data

Assessment Design

SRI adequately measures all groups of students--low-achievers, high-achievers, and those students in the middle. The assessment provides a range of inventories so that educators can target them to each student's reading level and obtain as precise a score as possible. The program provides guidelines for determining which Level test is most appropriate for each child.

Levels 11-16 correspond to the typical reading levels in Grades 1-6; Levels 17 and 18 correspond to the typical reading levels in Grades 7-8 and Grades 9-12. Spanish versions of these tests are available. Middle school and high school students who are reading more than three levels below grade level can take alternate tests that contain content-appropriate, low-readability text.

Test Administration

Teacher's can administer SRI tests at any time during the school year, in a group setting or individually. Although the tests are not timed, they take approximately 40-60 minutes to administer depending on the test level. SRI provides a practice test, directions for administering the Level tests, and an easy-to-use key to the correct responses for each level. Machine scannable forms are available for Levels 11-13 (Grades 1-3).

Actionable Data

The Teacher's Guide contains a table for converting the number of correct responses to a Lexile measure. The Lexile Framework for Reading, developed by MetaMetrics, Inc., is a research-proven system for measuring students' reading levels and matching readers to text using a common metric. SRI supports both norm-referenced and criterion-referenced interpretations of Lexile scores.

In addition to monitoring students' growth in reading comprehension over a period of time through pre- and post-testing, teachers use SRI results for instructional purposes. Lexile scores enable teachers to forecast what happens when readers confront text, and whether a student's performance places him/her at the At-Risk, Basic, Proficient, or Advanced reading level. The Lexile measure connects each student to actual reading materials at the appropriate level of challenge. To encourage reading outside of school, SRI provides a take-home booklist with recommended titles for each Lexile level.
