READING COUNTS - Math Assistant

READING COUNTS! GRADE 6

Reading Counts! is an interactive reading achievement program published by Scholastic Inc. Its goal is to motivate students to read and help teachers to manage, monitor, and assess student progress.

In sixth grade, each student’s goal is to earn 10 points by each due date. Due Dates are listed below.

To earn points, the student reads a book and takes a test on the computer. A list of books for which St. Martha has tests is displayed on the Reading Counts Homepage (accessed through the Saint Martha Website). The books in the St. Martha Media center (library) that may be read have a bright orange sticker with the point values for that book. There are also some books in the back of 7M and 6Be that may be read. Students should double-check any book they choose to read to make sure we have a test for it.

For sixth grade, a book that has as few as SIX points may be read, but the goal for that period remains the same. That means that the student will have to read more than one book. The student may attempt to pass the test on a book three times. If a test is failed, the student must wait until the next day to try again. Once the test has been failed three times, the computer will not let the student test on that title.

On the due date, points are deducted from the student’s point bank. Any points left over are saved in the point bank to be used later. The points translate into a performance test grade in the following manner: 10 points = 100%, 9 points = 90%, 8 points = 80% . . . 2 points = 20%, 1 point = 10%, 0 points = 0%.

If a student does not reach his/her goal, a negative balance is not carried over to the next due date. Instead, he/she will start from 0 and read to reach his/her goal for that time. Points in the point bank at the end of the year will carry over to the seventh grade.

To help students keep track of their progress, they receive a Reading Counts! log. I keep an identical record. Sixth graders are required to read a mystery, a non-fiction (which may include a biography or autobiography), a fantasy (including science fiction), and historical fiction (the setting must be before 1970). The other three titles are genres of each student’s choosing and may be duplicates. We will also read three books in class, Surviving the Applewhites, Number the Stars, and Bud Not Buddy. A Reading Counts! test may be taken for each of these books, however the book cannot be counted on the Reading Counts! log. This gives each student the opportunity to bank some extra points.

Due Dates (subject to be extended, not shortened):

Sept. 5 (three summer reading titles from the five assigned by Mrs. Dutton)

Sept. 26 Oct. 17 Nov. 14

Dec. 19 (Applewhites or Stars) Jan. 16 (Applewhites or Stars)
